COURSE DESCRIPTION: This Course Focuses on Applied Mathematics Related to Health Care;

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course focuses on applied mathematics related to health care; measurements, conversions, and ration/proportions. It is a standalone course, meaning it does not have a pre-requisite. The course content will include the calculation of dosages and solutions used by future practitioners of nursing and other health care professions whose responsibilities include safe administration of medications and solutions to clients in diverse clinical settings. This course will include opportunities for students to apply their knowledge and be very interactive in class.

COURSE OBJECTIVE: Students will become proficient in precise calculations of dosages, performing these calculations using critical thinking skills to ensure correct and safe administration of medications to all clients.

TEXTBOOK/SUPPLIES: Calculate with Confidence, Fifth Edition, Deborah Gray Morris, Mosby Elsevier. The text will be available for students through the trimester and should be maintained in good condition. Students are required to keep a notebook with this syllabus in the front for students to refer to. Students will be allowed to use a calculator for parts of the class and should have one available.

COURSE OUTLINE:

1. Successful completion of this class will be obtained if you complete assigned reading, complete assignments and projects, and remain alert and attentive during class. You will find the class much more enjoyable as you engage in meaningful discussion of daily topics and relate your personal experiences to the topic of the day.

2. Chapters will include power point presentations by the instructor and students, practice problems, lab activities using mannequins, group activities, and quizzes/tests consisting of a variety of objective and essay/writing questions.

3. Project activities may involve group work, career research, current events, and use of computer as well as other activities

4. Guest speakers are incorporated into the curriculum as appropriate.

5. Students are responsible for returning all the student application, medical release form, class expectations, and field trip permission form one calendar week from the time of distribution. Points will be deducted at the rate of 5 points per day thereafter until the forms are turned in. Failure to turn in a medical release and field trip permission form will forfeit the student’s opportunity to participate in educational learning experiences outside of class.

6. Students will keep assignments, notes, quizzes/tests in their notebook, and store any computer work on your location on the file server. Notebooks will be checked on Fridays for completed work. Anyone involved in cheating with get a “0” for that assignment/quiz/test. GRADING: The grading scale is:

A= 90-100, B= 80-89, C= 70-79, D= 60-69, F= 0-59

Grades will be determined by the following weights: Homework/Class work= 30%, Quizzes/Tests= 40%, Group Work/Lab=10%, Writing/Reading= 10%, Final=10%

It is important for students to set high goals early in the semester and work hard to achieve them. I will keep you apprised frequently regarding your progress, and you are certainly welcome to inquire about your grades.
