Matters Arising Actions The minutes of the last meeting were reviewed and approved.

DNA letters Everyone agreed that the second drafts of the letters are much improved. They like the paragraph that shows how patients can contact the surgery to cancel the appointments.

There was agreement that patients need to be informed about the implications of them not cancelling their appointments.

It was suggested that an article be put in the next newsletter.

Wording for the third letter was to suggest the patient find an alternative practice.

If anyone after the meeting has any further thoughts on the letter then they are to let Hazel know.

Dementia

It was confirmed that there is going to be a meeting on 27th August at St Peters Church Hall at 6.00 with all PPG’s. This is to discuss the details for the Mental Health Awareness Day which is taking place on 10th October.

Tim Laughton – Healthwatch (update from Marjorie)

Marjorie Sams gave the following update;

‘I spoke to Tim Loughton at the farmers market on 8th August. Here are his comments: He as contacted Healthwatch regarding the worries concerning the number of patients discharged from hospital and then re-admitted within 30 days. More worryingly the number of patients re-admitted within 24 hours of discharge. He is going to have a further meeting concerning these factors with Healthwatch. He also said that the 106 levy, from new houses being built had to go into the community.

A discussion regarding community (step down) beds was had. The PPG are keen to write a letter to West Sussex County Council to find out what they are going to do to meet their statutory responsibilities regarding this matter.

Hazel mentioned that there is Pro Active care to deal with discharge and to put plans in place

Bernard said that he will draft a letter.

Newsletter

Yvonne informed the group prior to the meeting that the newsletter is coming together and a draft should be out next week. From the patients

Marjorie has the following feedback from the patients: 1. The quality of care at home. It was noted that she has had feedback from a few patients to say that they have not had the care from proactive care that they thought they would be getting. Marjorie said that she has spoken with someone in proactive care and they informed her that they had lack of staff. Hazel said that they are still accepting new patients, so not sure that they would have lack of staff. Also it should be set out in patients care plans as to what service they will receive. Bernard said that he knew someone who had a very good service from Proactive care. 2. The increase in patients visiting our GPs for very minor queries, causing an increased pressure on our GPS. It was noted that this is a problem and is down to patient expectation. The MIAMI (minor illnesses and Minor injuries clinics) was mentioned. Hazel said that we haven’t sent too many to the clinic since it opened, mainly because Durrington Health Centre is too far for our patients to go. There will be another MIAMI clinic opening at Old Shoreham Road (opposite Lancing Leisure centre). 3. Patients going to A&E in the evenings and at weekends with worries concerning their health. It was noted that this is a national problem and has been going on for many years. Terri mentioned an initiative that was set up in Bristol to deal with the drunken patients who turn up in A&E. They set up a clinic in a church hall and treated patients there. Marjorie said that they have a similar set up in Brighton. 4. Are Doctors who are on call still coming from areas outside Adur to visit patients in Adur? Eg from Bournemouth. It was certain but it was thought that the majority of out of area Doctors would be at least in the West Sussex area.

AOB

Paramedics replacing GP’s Peter commented that he had concerns about the recent news that Paramedics could be replacing GP’s. They don’t have the same knowledge as GPS. Hazel explained that they had a Paramedic trainee in practice. He was given longer appointments times and dealt with home

visits. He was closely supervised by out GP’s. It was also noted that they are struggling to recruit paramedics.

Patient survey Hazel said that they have a patient survey out now. She wondered if any of the PPG members would be available to hand out and encourage patients to complete the survey at the flu clinics. The flu clinics will be held on Saturday 10th and 24th October. Anne said she would be available and Marjorie said she would be available on the 24th.

Hazel will be in touch with them nearer the time.
