WEST AGAINST THE REST URBAN DANCE TOURNAMENT 2017 RULES & REGULATIONS CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

 Dance routines must be 2 – 3 minutes in length  Each dance crew must have a total of at least 4 dancers with a maximum of 12  Dancers can only enter in their appropriate age category and cannot compete more than once in that same age category; this is to prevent performers from competing against themselves  A dancer may be on more than one dance crew, but the crews cannot be entering in the same category, i.e. if you are 18 years old you can enter in a dance crew for Varsity and then on another dance crew for Open if you wish to  Dance crew names and members must be the same for the whole tournament  Dancewear can be of your dance crew’s choosing, however: indecent exposure or inappropriate language, symbols and/or images on clothing will not be tolerated  Dance crew registration and permission forms must be completed and returned to Katriona Gauci - Melton City Council Youth Services by Friday 30th June for dance crews to be accepted into the tournament

TOURNAMENT

 The tournament is open for all dancers of all dance levels and municipalities  The dance tournament is held over two rounds. The first round is the preliminaries for each category to see which dance crews will qualify for the finals. The five best teams from each category will qualify for the finals and will have to do another performance to determine who places 1st, 2nd and 3rd for each category, trophies will be provided  Dance crews will have both scores included in their overall score in the finals MUSIC

 Music must be 2-3 minutes in length  Music must not be explicit i.e. no swearing, discriminatory language or glamorising of criminal behaviour  We will only accept music for dance crews on an individual CD or USB  iPods, tablets, mobile phones and MP3 players will not be accepted  Each individual CD or USB must only contain that entries music and must be clearly labelled with the name of the Dance crew, Dance School and entry# (entry number will be given to you after your registration is received)  When a USB is provided, each performance must have its own separate track and the tracks must be labelled like this: Entry# DanceCrewName and (DanceSchool) i.e. 131 HipHopJnrsCrew (HDanceAcademy)

 You must hand in all CDs/USBs to the DJ no later than 30mins before the beginning of that day’s competition (Be sure to have a backup of your music)

JUDGING

There will be three judges for the preliminaries and five judges for the finals. The panel of judges will include dance professionals from around Melbourne, a Melton City Council staff member and local youth volunteer.

All dancers, teachers and parents agree that the method of judging shall be solely within the discretion of Melton City Council and that all decisions of the judges are final. Dance crews will be adjudicated against a point system. In this way, the dance crews receive a more accurate evaluation of their performance Dance crews may pick up their Score Sheet Summaries at the end of the tournament.

SCORING WEST AGAINST THE REST URBAN DANCE TOURNAMENT 2017 RULES & REGULATIONS The point system consists of the following: each dance crew will receive two scores from the judges for their performance: a score for technical skills, and score for stage performance. Dance crews receive open scores onstage directly after their routine. Judges rate the scores from 1 to 10, 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. If a dance crew advances to finals they will be scored the same way for their new performance and the scores received from the first round will also count towards their overall score in the finals.

Technical scores are given on the basis of the following:

 The level of technical difficulty of the choreography and how well it is executed

 Bodily control

 Precision of motions

 Timing of dance precisions and how synchronous the dancers are

Stage performance scores are given on the basis of the following:

 Charisma

 Energy

 The movement and emotions expressed by the dancers

 The relationship between the movement and the music

 The overall experience of choreography and performance as a whole
