Leadership in Secondary Maths A conference for Maths Subject Leaders from St Helens, Wigan, Warrington and Knowsley Tuesday 12th May 2015 Dear Maths Subject Leader You are invited to attend this prestigious event which will raise the profile of Secondary mathematics teaching across St Helens, Wigan, Warrington and Knowsley. The conference will be held at Langtree Park, St Helens on 12th May 2015. This conference aims to support the improvement of leadership and teaching of mathematics. A copy of the programme is attached for information. The conference will be led by Stephanie Laurence, School Improvement Officer for Secondary Maths for School Improvement Liverpool, and the Keynote speaker is Steve Lomax of Kangaroo Maths. They will offer subject leaders insight into how to improve their leadership, and promote better teaching and learning in mathematics. Through the support of the Maths Hub, a place is being offered to schools for a nominal fee of £60 to cover the venue costs etc. Please note that the number of places is strictly limited to 50. Steve Lomax Steve has been working with senior leaders, mathematics subject leaders, teachers and pupils for over twenty years after gaining a First Class Degree in Mathematics. He is the Mathematics Strategic Lead for the Balcarras Teaching School Partnership and GLOW Maths Hub (www.ncetm.org.uk/glow,@GLOWmaths) and also works to improve outcomes for mathematics in primary and secondary schools and academies across the country through MaxTheMaths Consultancy. He is passionate about enthusing pupils at all levels to enjoy and achieve in mathematics. Through his current and previous roles of Mathematics Adviser for Gloucestershire (4-19), NCETM Specialist Adviser for Mathematics, Mathematics Subject Leader, SLT, AST and SLE, Steve has a proven track record, locally and nationally, of leading change in mathematics education and supporting schools to improve leadership, standards, teaching and enjoyment of mathematics within a school and across partnerships. Steve has great experience of facilitating partnerships and leading collaborative activity to create a ‘buzz’ about mathematics. He is a nationally accredited NCETM Primary and Secondary Professional Development Lead and co-founded of Kangaroo Maths www.kangaroomaths.com, @kangaroomaths, @kennycounts) with Matt Nixon. In his spare time, Steve enjoys learning about the amazing world of mathematics, authoring electronic and paper-based mathematical resources, contributing tweets based on mathematical facts for the day, gets frustrated with the misuse of mathematics in daily life and negative attitudes towards mathematics.

Stephanie Laurence – School Improvement Officer (Mathematics) Stephanie has worked for School Improvement Liverpool since 2001, first as a Key Stage 3 Consultant and then as a Secondary Consultant (11-19) for Mathematics. Currently she works for School Improvement Liverpool as a School Improvement Officer for Mathematics and Numeracy, and her work includes whole school approaches as well as subject support, and developing teaching in upper Key Stage 2. Prior to this, Stephanie was a Curriculum Leader in Maths in a Liverpool Secondary School, and led local authority professional development working groups in maths.

Stephanie is passionate about mathematics, and champions effective and cohesive approaches to mathematics and whole-school numeracy. She believes that everyone can be a problem solver, and everyone can do maths. And when she isn’t doing maths she spends her time trying to work out which weird and wonderful country to visit next!
