SUNDAY WORSHIP BULLETIN

September 13, 2009 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Westminster Presbyterian Church extends an enthusiastic welcome, in Christ’s name, to all who would worship here or join us in fellowship. We affirm that there can be no exclusion within the body of Christ. We invite all children of God to join us as disciples of Christ and participate fully in the life of our congregation.

Whether you are worshiping at Westminster for the first time or returning for a visit, we sincerely welcome you in the name of Christ!

She will have a gift for you, and can share information regarding our many ministries for children, youth and adults. She can also guide you to the hospitality area to enjoy fellowship or lead you on a tour of the church.

 Children are welcome in worship! Westminster’s Kids’ Notes and worship bags are available each Sunday from the ushers. Kids’ Notes, a weekly companion to Westminster’s morning worship, emphasizes listening and seeing during worship. The bags include storybooks for children of all ages, coloring paper and crayons, a children’s bulletin for those age three to six, and bookmarks for hymns and Scripture.

ORGAN PRELUDE Symphony no. 1 Louis Vierne IV. Allegro Vivace

CALL TO WORSHIP

Lift your hearts, lift your eyes and lift your voices! The living, moving Spirit of God has called us together. We are called together to hear the wisdom of God and to celebrate the love of God. We will heed God’s Spirit and faithfully follow Christ.

*HYMN NO. 482 “Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty” LOBE DEN HERREN

CALL TO CONFESSION Too often we are driven by impulses rather than our faith in Christ. We seek God’s mercy and yearn to be transformed.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, we confess that we stray from your path when we live only for ourselves, when we turn from our neighbors and refuse to share their burdens, when we ignore the pain of the world and pass by the poor and the oppressed. Free us from selfishness and inspire us to follow your way of justice and mercy so that we may experience the abundant lives you want us to live.

SILENT PRAYER

ASSURANCE OF GOD’S FORGIVENESS

In Jesus Christ we can discover new life. Through His life, death, and resurrection we are forgiven.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

We believe Christ calls us to pilgrimage toward the kingdom. Jesus announced the coming of God’s kingdom and its hidden presence in the midst of the world’s kingdoms. He taught his disciples to seek God’s kingdom first. We are in the world, but not of the world. Our confidence and hope for ourselves and other people do not rest in the powers and achievements of this world, but in the coming and hidden presence of God’s kingdom. Christ calls each of us to a life appropriate to that kingdom; to serve as he has served us; to take up our cross, risking the consequences of faithful discipleship; and to hope for what we have not seen. A Declaration of Faith

OFFERTORY ANTHEM “Walking On High Places” Howard Helvey

Mountain tops with their splendor Tow’ring from long ago. Eminent summits rise, Valleys lie below. Lofty hills are a refuge for my life’s shifting sand. Glorious blessings flow as with Him I stand. Walking on His high places I am blessed with God’s good graces: Following the path He’s chosen, Wandering in the ways He’s woven. Hearing all His words divine I am His and He is mine. From the depths of my soul To the heights up above, I’m lifted higher still by the Lord of love.

WORSHIP NOTES

The flowers in the sanctuary today are given to the glory of God from yesterday’s wedding of Emily Iobst and Travis Crawford.

Sanctuary Flowers - Consider giving the sanctuary flowers for Sunday worship. Your gift of God’s natural beauty to remember or honor loved ones, or to celebrate an event, expresses praise and thanksgiving to God. Please contact Linda Watson during business hours at 302-571-6719or [email protected].

Are you wearing a nametag? Whether you are a longtime member or new to the church, wearing a nametag provides others the opportunity to meet you, greet you by name, and for you to become more familiar with others at church. Nametags and markers are in baskets at all major entrances. Extend hospitality, kindness and friendship by wearing a nametag every Sunday.

“Westminster to Go” Audio tapes and DVD’s of recent Westminster worship services are available. Please use the sign-out sheet when you borrow them from the front desk. Printed sermons are available on the literature tables the following week and on our website at www.wpc.org.

MUSIC Concert and art exhibit coming soon! Join us in the sanctuary on Friday, October 2, at 8:00 p.m., for a dynamic concert by one of the area’s finest brass ensembles, Festive Brass. Organist Paul Fleckenstein will also make an appearance on the program, which will be sure to include something for every musical taste! Prior to the concert, an art exhibit featuring paintings by local artist Patricia Dawson will have its official opening, as part of Wilmington’s monthly art-loop event, Art on the Town. Watch for more details.

CONGREGATIONAL CARE AND PRAYER Please remember in your prayers:  Westminster’s homebound family who can no longer attend worship with us. Send a card, say a prayer, visit! This week we ask you to remember Betty Kelly, Apt. 134 and Louisa Morse, Apt. 340, Forwood Manor, 1912 Marsh Road, Wilmington, DE 19810

 Our brothers and sisters in worldwide ministry (see back page.)

Westminster’s Covenant Prayer Group is committed to praying weekly for specific needs of the faith community. Anyone with prayer requests may leave a confidential message on 302-654-5848, ext. 335, or fill out a prayer request card (in the pew pocket) and place it in the offering plate.

A Centering Prayer time occurs every Thursday at noon in the Ruth Christie Room. Anyone is welcome to participate. Basically, those who come spend thirty minutes in silence. Silence allows us time and space to empty our minds, quiet our brains’ chatter, and be still and attentive to God.

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan often seem far away, and we may neglect to realize that Americans, as well as Iraqis, Afghans, and members of coalition forces, continue to die each day. As Christians, we are called to pray for the spreading of peace and justice and an end to violence. If someone in your family is serving in these wars, we ask that you let us know, so that we may include that person on our prayer list. (Contact Maureen Ogden: 302-654-5214 ext. 126, or [email protected].)

Since the flavors always change, everyone looks forward to what mouthwatering item will be offered that week. A special thanks also goes to Roger Atkins who helped coordinate this activity.

Our Mission Emphasis for September is “Serving Others.”

Join us for our Mission Fair on Sunday mornings, September 20 and 27, as we honor Chad Miller's ministry with us and share information on the many ways Westminster dedicates our time, talent and treasure to serving others. Come to Community Hall and learn how your generous contributions are making a difference in our community and our world and find new ways to share God’s love.

Do You Have Your Guatemala Youth Mission Luncheon Reservation? Come and hear how the lives of our youth and their adult leaders were changed by their amazing experience this summer when the Guatemala Youth Mission Team hosts a luncheon on Sunday, September 20th, at 12:15 p.m. If you are a “shareholder” in the trip, you have already paid for your lunch. Now, you need to make your reservation so that we know how many people to expect. A youth will be at the desk for ten minutes following each of our morning worship services to take reservations. If you did not purchase a share prior to the mission trip, you may buy a share for $20 by calling the church office for a reservation (by Thursday, September 17th), or by stopping by the receptionist’s desk in the main hallway this morning following each of our morning worship services.

We will be hosted again by St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church through their RHINO projects. Accommodations are a bit more posh than past trips, as participants will be staying at Brent House, a residence hotel. Act now – there are openings in the next trip which will be November 16-22. Backpacks Project A Great Success! On Wednesday, August 26, we delivered 213 filled backpacks to Shortlidge Academy elementary school so that students there would be all set for the start of the school year. Thanks to all who participated so generously by shopping, check-writing, backpack stuffing and transportation. What a wonderful testament to our Faith in Action - helping our neighborhood children to succeed in school! We received funds in excess of the amount needed for the backpacks and supplies, so we will be working with the Shortlidge faculty to determine how best those dollars might be used to further benefit the students there. Look for more information in the weeks to come.

SMALL GROUPS For 12 weeks this fall, Rev. Anne Ledbetter will be leading a grief education and support group using the resource Understanding Your Grief. Through reading, journaling, and group discussion participants will take steps in learning about the grief process, understanding their personal experience of grief, and supporting one another on the journey. The registration fee for this group is $25 to cover materials. Please contact Anne ( 654- 5214, ext. 124; or [email protected] ) if you are interested in participating in this group which will meet Sunday afternoons, 5:00 – 6:30 p.m., from September 20 – December 6.

The next Dining and Donations gathering will be Monday evening, September 21st, 6:00 p.m., at the home of Bunny Michener, 615 Kilburn Rd., Tavistock. At this bi-monthly potluck, women bring a dish to share, and $20 for a mission project of the group’s selection. If you would like to attend, simply call Bunny (478-4224) to let her know what you will bring, and to get directions, if needed.

'Girl Talk' Continues: Our summer reading program was a great success! All involved would like to continue these gatherings and discussions now that autumn is near. We are working on the details for the full program year, but wanted to be sure you mark your calendar for Thursday, September 24, when we will gather at 7:00 p.m. at Anne Ledbetter's home for a discussion of Olive Kitteridge. Please RSVP to Anne (654-5214, ext. 124 or [email protected]) if you plan to attend - and feel free to bring a snack to share.

15 Evening Adult Education

Thursday evening Adult Education Classes begin soon! Check out these added opportunities at the CE Open House today:

Yoga – led by Christopher Sims Thursday evenings 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. Rodney Chapel Suggested donation $5-10 per class.

This yoga flow class is appropriate for all levels. No set fee, donations welcome to cover building costs and instructor’s time and expertise.

Is There Life After Death? – led by Dr. Alan Fox, Professor at UD Thursdays, Sept. 24, Oct. 1 and 8 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Classroom 6 Cost - $5 per session for WPC members

This class will explore the various cultural views of the afterlife with emphasis on the Tibetan Buddhist model. Dr. Fox will also discuss the importance of creating a good death. If the moment of death is the most critical moment of the afterlife, then a good life is understood to be a life that prepares us for that moment, a life that ends in a good death.

Long-term Exploration of Isaiah I, II, and III – Bible Study convened by Babs Harris Two Thursday evenings per month, 7 – 8 p.m., beginning September 24 Rowell Conference Room

This study is designed as an informal gathering for participants to assist each other, through readings and discussion, in a deeper understanding of the prophet Isaiah who is so frequently referenced in the New Testament. The format will be participatory rather than lecture. The class will meet twice a month on Thursdays, 7-8 p.m., beginning September 24th. Our first session will be an introduction to the book’s authorship, and historical and cultural background. Subsequent sessions will unfold Isaiah I, II, and III considering “What does it say? What did it mean? What does it mean today?” The study will illumine what lies between the lectionary portions of Isaiah. The rate of progress will be determined by the class participants, not by the calendar. Beginners and scholars welcome. For more information, contact Babs Harris, 302-325-9094.

Invitation to the New Testament – led by Bob Cox Thursdays, Oct. 15 – Dec. 17; 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Meeting Room Cost - $25 for materials

Developed by Disciple Bible Studies, this short-term 8-week class uses in-depth study of the biblical text, weekly preparation, video mini-lectures, and small group discussion to nurture personal discipleship. Using Matthew’s Gospel as a starting point, this study examines how New Testament writers and the early Christian community wrestled with the implications of the story of Jesus for their lives and their communities of faith.

16 Family Promise is an interfaith ministry wherein local faith congregations network to provide temporary housing (1 week at time) for homeless families. Shelters for people who are homeless typically take only males, or only women and children. Family Promise seeks to keep families together as parents seek permanent housing. Westminster signed on to become one of the 12 congregations needed to launch Family Promise Delaware (www.familypromisede.org) The target date to begin is late November, or January 2010 at the latest. Presently our major hurdle is to raise the funding to hire a ministry director and to purchase a van to move bedding and clients from congregation to congregation each week. Won’t you help raise money for this much needed ministry by eating at Friendly’s on Kirkwood Highway this Wednesday night? 10% of all proceeds will be donated to Family Promise Delaware, and help us get closer to making our ministry dream a reality.

Job Loss - Continuing Education Program - Thursday, September 17 For nearly 25 years, Stephen Ministry at Westminster has provided assistance to individuals who are dealing with a crisis in their lives, by training and assigning members of our congregation to offer companionship and support in difficult circumstances. An essential element of Stephen Ministry is the monthly Continuing Education program that offers information and other resources to aid people in dealing with various types of crises. All members and friends of Westminster are invited to our program on "Job Loss and the Job Seeker Path" on Thursday, September 17, from 7:30 to 8:30 pm in Classroom 6. Jerry Downie, a Westminster member and expert in this field, will present a helpful perspective on the unemployment situation currently being faced by many in our community. Please join us.
