SIRS Knowledge Source

SIRS Knowledge Source is a database portal that provides valuable information on social issues, economics, business, politics, global issues, scientific developments, health, history, government, culture, the arts and humanities. Resources are selected from reputable domestic and international publications and respected organizations. SKS is updated daily.

 Go to the Oregon School District Start page at http://www.oregonsd.net.  Click on Great Link System,  then Research,  and lastly, SIRS Knowledge Source.  The log in is: WI0432. The password is: apple.

1. You need to review a topic from today’s news for your social studies class.  Click the Database Features tab at the top of the page.  Now click Today’s News.  Find an article of interest to you and provide the information requested below. 2. You are having trouble in your algebra or geometry class and need to find a tutorial site.  Click on the Database Features tab.  Now click Curriculum Pathfinders.  Click the Math tab (in yellow bar).  Scroll to the bottom (use the far right scroll bar).  In the left box, scroll to Tools, Math Homework Help.  Copy and paste the web address of two sites that might help you with your math class you are taking right now.

3. You need an article for your health class.  Click the Home Button.  From the Leading Issues scrolling list section,  Select Doping in sports.  How many All Source Types are available about this subject? 4. How can you list the easier to read sources first? (Hint: Look in Sort Results by:)

5. Find a graphic that could be used in your PowerPoint presentation that explains the effects of steroids on the body. Paste it below. Resize to fit in the textbox below.

6. Find the source information about your image.  Click on Source at the right screen showing your picture.  Copy/Paste the information below.

7. Assume you are conducting research in your environmental science class on endangered species. Now you will practice searching using the Advanced Search tab on the SIRS homepage.  Search for ecosystem. How many all source types are available?  Search for ecosystem AND prairie. 8. You are doing a report in history about child labor in the world today.  Click the SIRS home icon.  In the scroll box to the left select, Child Labor  At the top of the screen you will see Pros/Cons where you can click on the links of newspaper and magazine articles.  At the bottom, you can scroll to numerous articles about child labor around the world.  Select one of the articles about child labor in the world today.  At the right you will see a yellow box with links to a summary. Click Summary.  Copy and paste below the summary of one article (written after 2005) that would help in your research. 8. Summary Information:
