SENIOR RESEARCH OFFICER/PROJECT MANAGER (5-year contract)

DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY AND MENTAL HEALTH FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES

The Centre for Public Mental Health in the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health has been awarded a research grant to conduct and build capacity for intervention research in sub-Saharan Africa: the Africa Focus on Intervention Research for Mental health (AFFIRM). AFFIRM will work in 6 sub-Saharan African countries (Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe) over a 5 year period. We are seeking a Senior Research Officer/project manager to work closely with the Principal Investigator of AFFIRM, to successfully implement the programme. This will be a 5-year fixed term contract. Requirements include:

 A completed Doctoral degree in public health, psychology or social sciences.  At least 3 years of experience working in post-doctoral research in public mental health in low resource settings.  Experience of capacity building in international research partnerships for mental health. Evidence of a publication record in peer-reviewed academic journals would be advantageous. Responsibilities include:  Conducting both qualitative and quantitative research, including providing oversight of data collection, and conducting literature reviews, analysis and write-up for publication.  Capacity building for intervention research in mental health, including post-graduate supervision  Establishing contractual arrangements with all partners  Project management  Monitoring project progress  Reporting to funder and liaising with finance staff at UCT regarding financial management  Facilitating collegial relations and team building both at UCT and internationally The annual remuneration package, including benefits for 2012, is negotiable between R345 000 and R450 000.
