TRISHA DONNELLY ORGANIZES EXHIBITION OF WORKS FROM MoMA’s COLLECTION AS PART OF THE ARTIST’s CHOICE SERIES

Artist’s Choice: Trisha Donnelly November 2, 2012–July 28, 2013 The Alfred H. Barr Painting and Sculpture Galleries, fourth and fifth floors

NEW YORK, October 18, 2012 [Updated]—The Museum of Modern Art has chosen Trisha Donnelly as the tenth artist to participate in Artist’s Choice, a series in which an artist whose work is in the Museum’s collection is invited to organize an exhibition from MoMA’s vast holdings. Artist’s Choice: Trisha Donnelly, on view from November 2, 2012 through July 28, 2013, presents rarely seen 20th-century photographs, films, design objects, prints, drawings, paintings, and sculpture in three of The Alfred H. Barr Painting and Sculpture Galleries on the fourth and fifth floors of the Museum. The exhibition is organized by Trisha Donnelly with Laura Hoptman, Curator, and Cara Manes, Collection Specialist, Department of Painting and Sculpture. The selected works—which range from color nature photographs to drawings by visionary architects—will be organized into three discrete presentations that together challenge viewers to rethink the way they typically apprehend and classify works of art. Donnelly has chosen to dedicate one gallery to photographs of birds by Eliot Porter (1901–1990), a pioneer of color nature photography. A group of microchip designs, featuring colorful and intricate works on paper from the Architecture and Design collection, are the focus of a second gallery. A third gallery will feature a chronologically eclectic mixture of drawings, photographs, and sculptures ranging from landscapes by the French painter Odilon Redon to a recent drawing by contemporary American artist Lee Bontecou. In addition to these three installations, several works that Donnelly selected for Artist’s Choice will be presented in unconventional ways, such as a narrated stop on the Museum’s audio tour of the collection, as well as objects interspersed within works currently on view in the collection galleries, and an untitled photo album (c. 1900) that Donnelly will present at a public program at the Museum on March 11, 2013. A map illustrating the locations of Artist’s Choice works will be available at the entrance to the galleries on the fourth and fifth floor. "Donnelly is an artist whose work challenges us to rethink the way we typically look at a work of art, changing the way we experience it,” says Ms. Hoptman. “The objects that she has chosen for Artist’s Choice do something similar for the Museum’s chronological display of painting and sculpture. Filled with rarely displayed works of art that may surprise even our most avid viewers, her galleries will open new portals through which to view the collection—and the history of modern art as the Museum tells it." Trisha Donnelly has been featured in exhibitions throughout the world, most recently at Documenta 13; the 54th Venice Biennale; the 2011 Sharjah Biennial; the Whitney Biennial; and the Carnegie International. She has had solo exhibitions at the Kölnischer Kunstverein, the Zurich Kunsthalle, and the ICA in Philadelphia, among other venues. Donnelly’s work has been a part of The Museum of Modern Art’s collection since 2010.
