 Welcome  Handouts: Intro to CINAHL

What is CINAHL Plus  Comprehensive source of full text resources for nursing and allied health literature.  Some overlap with Pubmed, although CINAHL will give you access to conference proceedings, book chapters, CEUs, dissertations, and audiovisual resources.

CINAHL Plus features  Free “My folder” (upper right hand corner) for anyone; may sign in anytime during a search. If you accidently close the window-- your searches will be lost.  Save searches to rerun at your own convenience and update what’s new since last viewed search  Set auto alerts to email searches  Conduct searches using keywords or MeSH under “CINAHL Headings.” Note, in CINAHL not everything has a MeSH Heading.  Search History/Alerts  Search multiple databases using “Choose Database” link above search boxes.

Simple Search: 1. Advanced search is default allowing you to limit your search immediately.

2. Search for diabetes and metabolic syndrome . You can narrow your results by using the limiters on the lift hand side or on the right by clicking on “Search Options” 3. Clicking on the citation will display relevant subject headings, abstract (if there is one available), and full text options. Find It will only display whether there is no full text available. (i.e. #10) 4. Show icons: “Cite” is a new one. Will display how to cite in a variety of formats for quick bibliographic help. 5. My Folder Options.

Combing searches: 1. Combine using Boolean operators in search field: a. And (think Hamburger & fries)—will decrease your results b. Or—will search each concept separately increasing your results c. Not—will exclude something (metabolic syndrome x NOT diabetes) 2. Search each concept separately 3. Combine separate search strategies within Search History

CINAHL Headings: 1. Cinahl headings contains MeSH headings, but not always. For example look at “reliability in both Pubmed and CINAHL headings. Slightly different. 2. Click CINAHL Headings and enter a term. “Diabetes” listed in relevancy--same as Pubmed can explode, click on heading and see tree along with options for subheadings. 3. Click box next to heading and chose to search database. Will show in search box as a (MH) or major heading. Will only find article that have Diabetes Mellitus as a major heading the in the article. 4. Hit clear 5. Return to CINAHL headings and type in metabolic syndrome. 6. Repeat and then combine search terms within “Search History.”

Importing to Bibliographic Citation Manager: can show them from citation icons

Publications: Journals indexed in the CINAHL® database can be searched alphabetically or by subject. Will signify dates included within CINAHL, potential embargo periods, availability via full text and dates available. By clicking on the title of a journal, additional information about the title and publisher will be displayed.

Evidence Based Care Sheets: provide 2-page summaries of treatment care for many conditions and include all references used in producing the summaries. You can either search for a term or select a topic from an extensive list. ****SEARCH FOR menopause and show they example

Quick Lessons are similar to the Evidence Based Care Sheets. They provide convenient 2-page summaries (with references) for many diseases and conditions. You can either browse for a term or select a topic from an extensive list. Each care sheet includes "What We Know", "What We Can Do", references, coding matrix, and list of reviewers. ***SEARCH FOR menopause, not finding any, check out Munchhausen

Cited References: A search which will help you find articles that referenced a specific article.

Citation Matcher: when you are unsure of article title or what journal it can be found in. Citation Matcher will find the article with incomplete citation information.
