Speight named WC’s newest customer service “star”

Waycross College has its newest customer service “star”. Angela Speight, assistant director of financial aid, received WC’s Commendation for Excellence in Customer Service for the fall 2010 semester. The award, which was created by WC’s Customer Service Committee, reinforces the state of Georgia’s effort in providing better customer service to those who use the WC campus. All WC employees are eligible to be nominated for the award, which is presented to the employee who has actively performed his or her duties for the college during fall or spring semester. According to the award’s criteria, the nominee should also have demonstrated WC’s five customer service commitments – courteous, helpful, accessible, responsive, and knowledgeable. “ Receiving the customer service award is a definite highlight in my life and my work experience this year,” said Speight. “I will continue to do my best and to provide a smile to every person I work with.” Dr. Neil Aspinwall, vice president of enrollment and student services, said Speight’s job is one of the most difficult on campus but that she handles all aspects of the job the same. “ Angela has the type of personality that makes students feel comfortable,” he said. “(When she works with) students who do not complete the necessary financial aid paperwork and/or submit the correct documents, she always greets each one with a smile and friendly demeanor.” Aspinwall said the process to obtain student loans changed at the beginning of the 2010-2011 academic year. Speight was charged with implementing the new procedures, which called for obtaining additional student data. The new steps caused some delays and frustration for students, but Aspinwall said Speight handled the situation very well. “ (She) used a great deal of professionalism in (working) with the students while explaining the reasons for the loan delays,” he said. Speight was presented with her award, along with a bouquet of flowers and a restaurant gift certificate, at the college’s recent customer service award reception. As the institutional award winner, Speight will be nominated for the statewide Governor’s Commendation for Excellence in Customer Service. Lynn Crews, director of academic affairs, and Curt Henderson, a custodian in WC’s physical plant department, are past winners of the college’s customer service award. Waycross College has been a proud member of the University System of Georgia since the college’s founding in 1976.
