This document provides specific information pertinent to Michigan schools as well as private scholarships that can be used at any school. Since 1938, the program has presented participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation's laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship. The program has featured numerous politicians and prominent contestants over the years, including former president candidate Alan Keyes and CNN anchor Lou Dobbs.

Young orators earn some of the most generous college scholarships available to high school students. Over $138,000 in scholarships can be awarded each year. The overall national contest winner gets an $18,000 scholarship. Second place takes home $16,000, and third gets $14,000. Each department (state) winner who is certified into and participates in the national contest's first round receives a $1,500 scholarship. Those who advance past the first round receive an additional $1,500 scholarship. The American Legion's National Organization awards the scholarships, which can be used at any college or university in the United States.

High school students under age 20 are eligible. Competition begins at the post level and advances to a state competition. Legion department representatives certify one winner per state to the national contest, where department winners compete against each other in two speaking rounds. The contest caps off with a final round that decides the three top finishers.

Speaking subjects must be on some aspect of the U.S. Constitution, with some emphasis on the duties and obligations of citizens to our government. Speeches are eight to 10 minutes long; three- to five-minute speeches on an assigned topic also are part of the contest. To celebrate the passion Donté Hawkins had for assisting his fellow students to achieve their educational goals by supporting them to get books for college. While Donté was attending college he would share his books with his classmates who couldn't buy their books.

Our focus is to continue to provide a scholarship to support education and celebrate Donté's life. We are committed to working with high schools, colleges, universities, and churches to identify students who need assistance with buying their books to succeed in continuing their education.

Each year the NLC hosts a Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference. Some initiatives of the conference include: donations of books to local schools and/or libraries, raising funds for headstones of unmarked graves, and the awarding of scholarships.

Academic performance, standardized test scores, class rank, and a student’s personal statement are often used to determine eligibility. These awards are four-year, renewable scholarships that recognize outstanding high school students upon review of their cumulative high school GPA, ACT/SAT test scores, and strength of curriculum. Scholarship amounts may be increased by review of FAFSA information, higher ACT/SAT test scores, and/or higher cumulative high school GPA, all of which must be submitted prior to the March 1, 2016 priority deadline. Students are automatically considered for these scholarships with a completed UT application for admission, official high school transcripts and official ACT and/or SAT scores. Students must be enrolled in courses on-campus in order to qualify for these scholarships. Renewal criteria includes maintaining a 2.75 cumulative GPA and earning 27 UT credit hours within two semesters of the academic year. Books, fees, housing, food and other living expenses are not included in the scholarship; however, most or all of these costs may be covered by financial aid and available state support, thereby making it possible for a Seita Scholar to earn an undergraduate degree with few or no student loans.
