1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A HOUSE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE 12 MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF 13 REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF HENRY 14 BYNUM OF SUMTER AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST 15 SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS. 16 17 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of 18 Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the death of 19 Henry Bynum of Sumter on May 7, 2015, at the venerable age of 20 eightytwo; and 21 22 Whereas, the third of four children born to the late Adelaide Esther 23 Clarke Bynum and William Edwards Bynum of Sumter, Henry 24 Bynum entered this world on October 10, 1932. The young Henry 25 grew up at 131 Church Street in Sumter, and his first job was 26 delivering the Sumter Daily Item. Having graduated from 27 Edmunds High School in 1950, he earned his bachelor’s degree in 28 1954 at Wofford College, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha 29 Order and the tennis team; and 30 31 Whereas, it was while working at Lake Junaluska Assembly in 32 North Carolina that Mr. Bynum met his future wife, and they were 33 married on April 17, 1955. While serving two years in the U.S. 34 Army, the Bynums lived in Nuremberg, Germany; and 35 36 Whereas, Henry Bynum began working in the insurance business 37 in 1959, his entrepreneurial spirit later leading him to become the 38 owner of Bynum Insurance Company. His two sons, Clarke and 39 Edward, eventually joined him in the insurance business; and 40 41 Whereas, as a man of faith, Mr. Bynum was a devoted lifetime 42 member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He attended the
[4191] 1 1 Boyle Bible Class and served as chairman of finance, the 2 administrative board, longrange planning, and the building 3 committee, among other positions of church responsibility; and 4 5 Whereas, for more than forty years, Henry Bynum was a summer 6 resident of Lake Junaluska, North Carolina. He served as a trustee 7 of Lake Junaluska Assembly and as a board member of the 8 Intentional Growth Center at Lake Junaluska. He served also as 9 projects chairman of Junaluska Associates and received the Chief 10 Junaluska Award in 2001; and 11 12 Whereas, his many civic pursuits included service as president of 13 the YMCA Board of Directors and chairman of the Wilson Hall 14 School Board. He was a member of the National Bank of South 15 Carolina Advisory Board, a board member of Sunset Country 16 Club, and a former member of the Sumter Rotary Club. He served 17 as president of the Sumter Independent Insurance Agents, was a 18 member of Mount Vernon Coffee Club for fortyseven years, and 19 enjoyed playing golf with his friends and family members; and 20 21 Whereas, to his friends, neighbors, and family, Henry Bynum’s 22 legacy is a rich and lasting one that may be summed up in this 23 tribute: he was a man who loved his hometown and invested 24 himself in its betterment; a father who instilled Christian values 25 into his children; a husband who faithfully loved his wife, Pat; and 26 an exemplary man of God who passionately and humbly served the 27 Lord throughout his life; and 28 29 Whereas, preceded in death by his son, Henry Clarke Bynum Jr., 30 Henry Bynum is survived by his beloved wife of sixty years; his 31 daughter, Louise Lanius Bynum Mitchum and her husband, Robert 32 “Eddie” Mitchum; his son, Edward Kennedy Bynum and his wife, 33 Yvette Dibrell Bynum; eight grandchildren; two 34 greatgrandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. He 35 will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing 36 him. Now, therefore, 37 38 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 39 40 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 41 by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing 42 of Henry Bynum of Sumter and extend the deepest sympathy to his 43 family and many friends.
