Two-Alarm Fire Damages Ethan Allen Shopping Center

The Burlington Fire Department responded to the Ethan Allen Shopping Center at 1127 North Avenue at 0227 hours early Friday morning, June 1 2012 for a structure fire reported by an on-duty Burlington Police officer. The first due engine company arrived in three minutes and noted heavy fire showing from under the covered walkway near Body Le Bronze. The fire extended into the void spaces of the roof assembly. To access this deep-seated fire, firefighters were required to cut multiple ventilation holes in the roof in order to remove high heat and large amounts of smoke from the void spaces. Fire extended in the ceiling along the south wall of the complex. Firefighters continued to locate and extinguish spot fires throughout the south end of the complex for approximately seven hours.

50 Burlington firefighters and all department apparatus responded to this second alarm fire. Other responding agencies included Burlington Police, UVM Rescue, American Red Cross, Burlington Electric Department, and Vermont Gas. Mutual aid companies from Winooski and South Burlington Fire Departments provided station coverage and responded to additional emergencies in the City.

The building is owned by Hauke Building Supply, David Hauke – proprietor. The property is valued at 4.5 million dollars and is fully insured. Preliminary damage is estimated at $275,000. Burlington Barber Shop and Body Le Bronze suffered moderate damage. Damage to Aaron’s Rental and Essential Nail Spa is minimal. There have been no reported civilian or firefighter injuries. This fire remains under investigation by the Burlington Fire Marshal’s Office and the Burlington Police Department. Due to the diligent efforts of firefighters on scene and with the cooperation of City inspection services, six of the eight affected businesses in the complex were able to re-open by noon on Friday.
