During the silent reflection at the April Pleasant Hill Town Council Meeting, Mayor Savage reflected on the service of Councilperson, Peg Muenstermann, who recently passed away. At the May Town Council Meeting, concern was expressed that the Yonside resident who has installed an illegal culvert at the bottom of his driveway has not responded to the Town’s registered letter ordering its removal. Projects reported by the Building Inspector are underway on the former Thompson house on Main St. and the renovation of the former Village Market into a Fellowship Hall for the PH Baptist Mission on Browntown Road. An Ordinance to amend the International Building Code 212 was passed on second reading. The Cumberland County Sheriff informed the Town Council that they no longer have to pay the telephone and internet service for the Sheriff’s PH Substation as those services are in the patrol cars. In addition the Sheriff will run extra patrols at the west end of Town to stop motorcycles and four-wheelers from abusing traffic laws.

The following Resolutions were approved in April: 2016-04 Jackson Law, 2016-05 Vacancy, and 2016-06 Open Records Law. The Council moved to donate up to $300 for mulch for the PH School playground asking for matching funds, and to donate $250 each to the PH Girl Scout Troop 2907 and and Boy Scout Troop 170. The Council once again moved to donate $10 gift cards to the teachers and staff at PHS in appreciation for their continued dedicated guidance of the children. At the May Council meeting, Justin Ball, representative, discussed the 4 retirement plans available to municipal employees from the TN Consolidated Retirement System. First Readings of Ordinances 16-07 Inter-local Agreement with County Sheriff and 17- 01 New Budget for Fiscal year ending June 30 2018 were passed.

Pleasant Hill Elementary School activities are winding down as they near their summer break on May 26. Sighs of relief accompanied the TCAP Testing the first week of May. PreK and K Registration resulted in oversubscribed PreK applicants. A Book Fair was held May 8 through 12. The Science Fair was held on May 9. Eighth Grade Graduation was accomplished on May 11. A dinner and “Talent at the ‘Hive’” show was enjoyed on May 12. The Spring Formal for Grades 6-8 was a gala affair on May 13. Volunteers were appreciated with a Brunch on the morning of May 15. The final School Skate Night was held on May 15 with free hotdogs and drinks plus a door prize awarded for attending. Field Days were enjoyed on May 18 & 19 and the yearbooks were distributed, eagerly read, and signed.

Students and Teachers joined with PH Historical Society of the Cumberlands in celebrating the 200th anniversary of the casting of the Paul Revere Bell, which rang in the PH Academy for many years and now resides in a gazebo next to Pioneer Hall. On May 16, 17, & 18 groups of students toured school grounds on a Walking Trail depicting the sites of PH Academy buildings, visited the Bell, and Pioneer Hall Museum listening to their teachers and the Museum docents. On Friday, May 19 a School Assembly at 1 pm showcased the School Choir singing an original song about the Revere Bell and learned from a skit performed by Don Nelson as Paul Revere and Ron Riggs assisting as a “redcoat”. Academic Awards were held all day yesterday for the different grades and for 8th Grade at 5 pm. That long awaited last full day of school occurs today and then the children are off until they pick up their Grade Cards on Friday, May 26. Now we ask that all drivers be especially careful as they travel around the Town and County because the children will be out and about during day light hours. Those of you with children and grandchildren are urged to encourage them to read something everyday to help keep their skills sharp …. and besides its fun!
