Title Field graft and/or bud fruit trees or vines

Purpose This unit standard is for people working under limited supervision with responsibility for their work routines, in a production horticulture context. People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare to graft, field graft or bud fruit trees or vines, and complete grafting activities and provide follow up maintenance.

Explanatory notes

1 Evidence requirements must be consistent with:  Workplace  Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.

2 Workplace procedures refer to policies and procedures on safety, operation, and production set down by the employer or host organisation for grafting and/or budding fruit trees or vines.

3 Equipment may include – secateurs, grafting knife, grafting machine.

4 Vines are woody or herbaceous plants whose stem is indeterminate, typically require support, and climb by tendrils, twining or creeping along the ground. Examples include – kiwifruit, grapes, tomatoes, cucumbers, capsicums.

5 Evidence of competency may be demonstrated on young or mature vines.

Prepare for grafting and/or budding fruit trees or vines according to workplace procedures.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Select and prepare plant material.

1.2 Select and prepare equipment.

Outcome 2

Field graft and/or bud fruit trees or vines according to workplace procedures.

2.1 Carry out grafting or budding at optimum stage for plant growth.

2.2 Carry out grafting or budding without damage to plants, equipment, or property structures.

2.3 Treat and/or tape and/or secure graft.

2.4 Monitor and maintain equipment during use to ensure optimum results.

2.5 Dispose of, or store any unused material.

2.6 Report workplace information, and maintain records of field grafting and/or budding.

Outcome 3

Maintain the new grafts and/or buds for a period of at least six weeks according to workplace procedures.

3.1 Remove unwanted growths.

3.2 Monitor and report pests and diseases.

3.3 Provide support for new scion growth.

3.4 Report workplace information, and maintain records of new graft and/or bud maintenance.
