Station 5 – Electrical – 3 Way Switches #2

 At this station, you will be installing a receptacle, a light and (2) 3-way switches…another alternative.

 The power goes to the LIGHT first, THEN branches off to both switches. (see diagram)

 Both switches control (turn it on & off) the light but NOT the receptacle. They are special switches just for this type of application.

 Two diagrams are provided: o One shows you the layout of the boxes, o The other shows you proper hookup of the wires.

 There is also a CHECKLIST of Materials and Tools provided. o This HAS to be completed BEFORE you begin to ensure you have everything you need..  It also HAS to be completed AFTER you have finished to ensure you leave everything for the next group.

 Once all wires are installed and hookups completed, I need to SEE AND EVALUATE the project BEFORE everything is secured inside the boxes and tested. Station 5 – Electrical – 3 Way Switches (B)

Install ALL required electrical BOXES

See DIAGRAM for Layout of boxes o The BOTTOM of the OUTLET BOX will be @ 12” from the floor. o The box must also stick out @ past the stud. o Using (2) 3 ½” deck screws and the cordless drill, attach the outlet box at the required height and depth. o Screws MUST be DIAGONALLY INSERTED and must NOT be too tight!!

o NEXT, the BOTTOM of the (2) SWITCH BOXES will be @ 48” from the floor. o The box must also stick out @ ½” (or slightly less) past the stud. (Remember the 2 side tabs!!) o Using (2) 3 ½” deck screws and the cordless drill, attach the first switch at the required height and depth. (See diagram/photo for layout) o Using (2) 3 ½” deck screws and the cordless drill, attach the second switch at the required height and depth. (See diagram/photo for layout) o Screws MUST be DIAGONALLY INSERTED and must NOT be too tight!!

o LASTLY, Install the LIGHT BOX (OCTAGON) to RIGHT SIDE of the MIDDLE STUD @ 72” from the floor. o The box must also stick out @ ½” ( or slightly less) past the stud. (Remember the 2 side tabs!!) o Using (2) 1” deck screws and the cordless drill, attach the octagon box to the stud at the required height and depth. o This time, Screws will be INSIDE the box.

Install GROUND WIRES in ALL electrical boxes o In EACH OF THE 4 BOXES, there must be a separate ground wire (@ 6-8” long) attached to one of the grounding screws at the back of the box. o Wrap the wire around the screw (clockwise) and then secure firmly using the appropriate screw driver. Running WIRES to the electrical boxes o Measure the distance between the OUTLET Distance = BOX and SWITCH BOX #1 above it. o Now add @ 14” to it to determine the length of wire needed between the outlet box and switch + 14” + 14” box. o Now obtain/cut a piece of 14/2 electrical wire of TOTAL + 14” this length. NEEDED o Insert the wire through one of the TOP holes of the outlet box and the other end into one of the BOTTOM holes in the switch box #1. o In each of the boxes, the wire should be UNDER THE CLAMP and firmly against the BACK of the box. o Secure both ends of the wire under each clamp using the appropriate screwdriver. o Measure the distance between SWITCH BOX#1 Distance = and the LIGHT BOX (OCTAGON). o Now add @ 12” to it to determine the length of wire needed between the switch box and light + 12” + 12” box. o Now obtain/cut a piece of 14/3 electrical wire of TOTAL 18” this length. NEEDED o Insert the wire through one of the TOP holes of the switch box #1 and the other end into one of the BOTTOM holes of the light (octagon) box. o In each of the boxes, the wire should be UNDER THE CLAMP and firmly against the BACK of the box. o Secure both ends of the wire under each clamp using the appropriate screwdriver. o Measure the distance between the LIGHT BOX Distance = (OCTAGON) and SWITCH BOX#2. o Now add @ 12” to it to determine the length of wire needed between the light and switch box + 12” + 12” #2. o Now obtain/cut a piece of 14/3 electrical wire of TOTAL 18” this length. NEEDED o Insert the wire through one of the BOTTOM holes of the light (octagon) box and the other end into one of the TOP holes of switch box #2. o In each of the boxes, the wire should be UNDER THE CLAMP and firmly against the BACK of the box. o Secure both ends of the wire under each clamp using the appropriate screwdriver.

PREPARING the wires for Connection

o The white EXTERIOR coating of ALL wires inside each box needs to be removed. o Using a Utility knife, or Snap-off Blade, lightly score the coating - down the middle of the wire. o Pull the coating apart and cut it off, as close to the clamp as possible. o Be sure to leave coating on the part of the wire that is being clamped. o NEXT, Use your wire strippers to strip @ ¾” plastic from ALL conducting wires (black & white wires) in ALL BOXES.

Connecting the WIRES – Outlet/Receptacle

STARTING WITH THE OUTLET… o Obtain a RECEPTACLE (plug-in!) o Obtain or make a separate ground wire (@ 6-8” long). o Wrap ONE END of this ground wire around the GROUND SCREW OF THE RECEPTACLE (clockwise) and firmly secure using the appropriate screwdriver. NOTE: Now you have 3 ground wires to connect inside the box; 1. one attached to the back of the box 2. one from the wires coming DOWN from the top 3. AND one you just attached to the receptacle

INSIDE THE OUTLET BOX… o PIGTAIL ALL GROUND WIRES (3 of them) together. Hold them firmly with one hand and then use a pair of linesman pliers to twist them together (clockwise). o SNIP/CUT the end of the pigtailed ground wires with the linesman pliers, then firmly twist a WIRE CAP (MARRETT) on the end of the ground wires. o Bend the ground wires and push inside of the box…all the way to the back!

INSIDE THE OUTLET BOX… o Wrap the BLACK wire around the BRASS (HOT) screw (clockwise) and firmly secure using the appropriate screwdriver. (Check the back of outlet to make sure you have the correct screw!) o Wrap the WHITE wire around the SILVER screw (clockwise) and firmly secure using the appropriate screwdriver.
