October 10, 2013

Introductions

Thank you to … 6th graders Emily and Tatiana, along with high school student Jeremy Horter, for providing babysitting for PTO meeting; CW staff for purchasing Spirit Wear; those who helped out with Open House and with the Garden Clean-Up; and Lisa Orchen for coordinating Room Parents/Helpers.

First Grade Teachers: Reported on the tremendous impact all-day kindergarten has had on the first-grade transition and stamina.

September Meeting Minutes approval: 1st Jen Hedlund, 2nd Caroline Fazzina

Treasurer’s Report approval: 1st Kristin Stearly, 2nd Lisa Orchen

Committee Updates – 6th Grade – Lyman Pie Fundraiser and Wolfpack Night; 6th graders get a t-shirt commemorating their year – it is gifted to them; students are interested in volunteer hours for the school (i.e., PTO babysitting, fall clean-ups, etc.); Dec. 6th is Parents Night Out – drop children off at CW from 5:30-8:00 for $5 per child & pizza and water and students and 6th grade parents will babysit; looking to bring an enrichment for 6th graders; WSPC – Walk-to-School day was great! Approximately 220 out of 300 kids walked, including students who normally take the bus, and CW won a walking school bus from Connecticut Safe Routes to School – they will provide us with a plan to determine if we have the right cross walks, sidewalks in good repair, and then there is the possibility to receive money to make those recommendations for repairs. Superintendent Emmett discussed CMT scores, class sizes, and high school reno – traffic patterns on Wolcott Hill will change, and limited use of high school for activities so other schools’ activities may be impacted. Book Fair – planning it around Holiday concert and Special Person’s Day Dec. 9th-13th. Scholastic Book App allows you to scan a book and information on the book will come up with a summary, DRA levels, and similar books. Box Tops – challenge to all classes so class that brings in most “wins” a pizza party or ice cream social. G. Horter: Looking to see our school grow with afterschool programs – because we qualify for Title I funding, we also qualify for extended day programs. Bringing cultural awareness to our school – first Tuesday of each month, families from different cultures will share the stories of their journies and cultural information to help build relationships with families from all over the world. Clear policies regarding school security need to be communicated to parents – sign-in and sign-out times are being tracked. Please let Principal Horter know of concerns.

Coming up: Wooden Toy Fundraiser; after-school movie; picture day 10/17; Jog-a-Thon 10/18; Freaky Friday 10/25; from WCOC – Holidays on Main 12/5 from 5:00-9:00 – essay contest will be held with winner getting to light the tree.
