2016 SAMPLE Saw Cut LOOP REPLACEMENT PROVISIONS (June 1, 2015)

"2016 SAMPLE" Saw Cut LOOP REPLACEMENT PROVISIONS (June 1, 2015) This “sample” set of Signal System Special Provisions will require editing (add, delete, modify, update, etc.) prior to use on a specific project. Some of the paragraphs included in these special provisions are project specific and may not be required on every project. Use the language when appropriate based on the plan and as directed in RED text. All RED text must be removed from the special provisions prior to the special provisions being submitted for project letting.

DIVISION SS

SS-1 (1802) QUALIFICATION OF WORKERS

Workers are required to be certified in accordance with 2545.1B.

SS-2 (2565) LOOP DETECTORS

This work shall consist of providing, installing, and making operational new saw cut loop detectors due to roadway construction in accordance with Standard Plate 8130, the applicable provisions of MnDOT 2565, the current edition of the National Electrical Code, the Plans, as directed by the Engineer and as follows:

SS-2.1 GENERAL

The intersection layouts indicating the affected loop detectors to be replaced are included elsewhere in these Special Provisions “For Information Only”.

SS-2.2 MATERIALS

A. Roadway Loop Detector Conductors

Roadway loop detector conductors shall be in accordance with the provisions of MnDOT 3815.2B2 (conductors for roadway embedded saw-cut loop detectors).

B. Loop Detector Splices

Only use MnDOT approved loop detector splice encapsulation kits.

MnDOT approved Splice Encapsulation Kits are listed on MnDOT’s Approved/Qualified Products List for Signals:

C. Loop Detector Sealant Material

Place MnDOT approved loop detector sealant.

Place loop detector sealant in accordance with manufacturer requirements.

SS-2.3 CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

A. Loop Detector Installation

Before milling operations, sever the loop detector conductors from the loop detector lead- in cable (2/C #14) at the splice in the adjacent handhole of the affected loop detectors. Notify the Engineer before severing the detector conductors from the lead-in cable.

All new loop detectors shall be saw cut in the roadway at the locations marked by the Engineer; in accordance with Standard Plate 8130, the applicable provisions of MnDOT 2565.3G; and as detailed in the Plan.

Prior to installing the approved loop detector splice encapsulation kit, the Contractor shall solder the ends of the loop detector lead-in conductors to the roadway loop detector conductors, and shall provide and install an appropriate sized wire nut to the soldered ends prior to installation of the splice kit.

Install splice kits in handholes in such a manner as to ensure that each splice kit is suspended and/or secured near the top of the handhole to the satisfaction of the Engineer.

Placing splice kits on top of the electrical cables and conductors is NOT acceptable.

Loop detectors shall be spliced using an approved splice encapsulation kit as specified elsewhere in these Special Provisions.

Make all loops fully operational within one (1) day after installation.

B. Loop Detector Test Report

Provide a loop detector test report in accordance with 2565.3G.3.
