This document provides a guide for faculty proposing courses for incorporation into the University’s General Education program. This document is not a substitute for general University guidelines for course approval. Rather it is a specific guide to the requirements for incorporation into General Education. These guidelines presuppose the proposed course has already been approved through the University’s general guidelines for course approval. In preparing your GE proposal, please consult the “GE Learning Outcomes” available at http://laverne.edu/general-education/learning-outcomes/ to make sure your course meets the required outcomes for a particular area. Course outlines/syllabi for existing courses may need revision to reflect the new GE outcomes. Please submit all materials electronically to Felicia Beardsley, College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office, [email protected].

Please check the Breadth Area(s) for which you are seeking approval: All outcomes must be satisfied for a course to satisfy a Breadth Area. A course may satisfy more than one Breadth Area if all outcomes are met. A Breadth Area course may not meet the Interdisciplinary area. Critical Skills Written Communication A Humanities – Philosophy/Religion The Natural World – Physical Science Written Communication B Humanities – Foreign Language Social/Behavioral Science – Behavioral Science Oral Communication Humanities – Mass Media Social/Behavioral Science – Political Science Quantitative Reasoning Humanities - History Social/Behavioral Science – Economics Humanities – History of Fine Art Social/Behavioral Science – Inter-Area Areas of Knowledge Humanities – Inter-Area Creative and Artistic Expression Humanities – Literature The Natural World – Life Science Lifelong Fitness

Please check here if you would like the course designated in one or more “University Values.” All outcomes must be satisfied for a course to satisfy an area of the “University Values.” A course may be approved for no more than two University Values. University Values Values Orientation Lifelong Learning Community and Diversity Community Service

Please check here if you would like the course considered for the interdisciplinary designation. Please consult the definition of “Interdisciplinary” as stated in the “GE Learning Outcomes.” The course must satisfy both the definition and the outcomes to be approved for the “Interdisciplinary” designation. An Interdisciplinary course may not also meet a Breadth Area. Interdisciplinary (300-400 level course).

Faculty members seeking course approval for the General Education Program can submit their course to the GE Committee for review in one of two ways:

Option #1: Course Outline Faculty members may submit a Course Outline for review if the GE Learning Outcomes are clearly embedded in the outline. This is a good option for new course development or for outlines that clearly reflect the GE learning outcomes.

Option #2: Course Outline/Syllabus and Outcomes and Assessment Worksheet If the GE learning outcomes are not clearly spelled out in the course outline, faculty members may submit a course outline or syllabus along with the “Outcomes and Assessment Worksheet.” The Worksheet gives the faculty member an opportunity to explain how the outcomes are met in the course. The “Outcomes and Assessment Worksheet” is available at http://laverne.edu/general-education/faculty-resources/
