GILES, JR., PRESIDENT OF 12 SPARTANBURG COMMUNITY COLLEGE, ON FORTYFIVE 13 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THAT INSTITUTION AND TO 14 HONOR HIM FOR HIS STRONG COMMITMENT TO 15 EDUCATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA. 16 17 Whereas, since 1969, Spartanburg Community College, formerly 18 known as Spartanburg Technical College, has enjoyed the benefit 19 of the dedication, experience, and leadership of Mr. Henry C. 20 Giles, who on August 21, 2014, will celebrate nearly a half century 21 of service at that fine institution, the past two years as interim 22 president, president, and the past fifteen as executive vice 23 president; and 24 25 Whereas, during his fortyfiveyear tenure at Spartanburg 26 Community College, Mr. Giles, well respected by his colleagues, 27 served first as a mathematics teacher. He progressed through the 28 ranks, serving as coordinator of special projects, director of special 29 projects, planning and grants coordinator, director of development, 30 vice president for development, vice president for academic 31 affairs, senior vice president for business affairs, and, finally, his 32 present posts as executive vice president, interim president, and 33 president; and 34 35 Whereas, in preparation for his distinguished career, the young 36 Henry Giles attended Wofford College, where he earned a 37 bachelor’s degree in mathematics, followed by a Master of Arts in 38 Teaching (mathematics) at Converse College. In addition, he 39 pursued further graduate work in highereducation administration at 40 Florida’s Nova University and in management at the University of 41 South Carolina; and 42
[5263] 2 1 Whereas, Henry Giles believes strongly in personal involvement 2 with his community, and his convictions have led him to serve that 3 community, as well as the broader community of South Carolina, 4 in numerous capacities. These include past or present membership 5 in various civic and professional organizations, such as the 6 Spartanburg Chapter of the National Association of Accountants, 7 Spartanburg County Board of Education, Leadership Spartanburg 8 Alumni Association Board of Directors, Spartanburg Area 9 Chamber of Commerce Board, and Cowpens Planning 10 Commission; and 11 12 Whereas, in addition, Mr. Giles has served as a president of the 13 East Spartanburg Rotary Club, on the Healthy Smiles of 14 Spartanburg Board, as president and board member of Kiwanis 15 Club of Rutherfordton, and on the Rutherfordton Town Council; 16 and 17 18 Whereas, the General Assembly, grateful for Mr. Giles’s many 19 years of faithfulness in serving the people of South Carolina, takes 20 great pleasure in commending him for his contributions to 21 education in this great State, especially in the Spartanburg area. 22 Now, therefore, 23 24 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 25 concurring: 26 27 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this 28 resolution, congratulate Henry C. Giles, Jr., president of 29 Spartanburg Community College, on fortyfive years of service to 30 that institution and honor him for his strong commitment to 31 education in South Carolina. 32 33 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to 34 Henry Giles. 35 XX 36
