ANNOUNCEMENT: 2009 KANSAS CITY IFMA SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose: The Kansas City Chapter of International Facility Management Association is seeking to reward potential for excellence in facility management. A career in professional facility management requires effective skills in communication and problem solving. Successful facility managers show an ability to provide and maintain effective workplaces, an awareness of workplace trends and technology, and dedication to professional ethics and values. The responsibilities of facility management are constantly changing. Facility managers supervise numerous aspects of a company’s facility, including security, architecture, computer systems, telecommunications, design, real estate acquisitions, and more. They coordinate the physical workplace with the people and work of an organization and play a role in maximizing employee productivity and efficiency. Various academic curricula prepare individuals for this career. Award: A scholarship pool of $3,000 has been approved by the Board, to be awarded to students of local area colleges and universities. Awards will be a minimum of $500, and may be higher, depending on number of applicants and qualifications of same. Scholarships will be awarded in June 2009. Eligibility: Must be a full time undergraduate or graduate student or a part-time graduate student registered in a Kansas or Missouri College or University enrolled in a curriculum relating to facility management. Those curriculums include, but are not limited to, the study of interior design, architecture, engineering, business operations, construction science and environmental design. SELECTION CRITERIA: Following are guidelines, which will be used by the selection committee to determine the applicant’s eligibility.

1. Letter of Professional Intent (to include):  Description of applicant's short term and long term career goals  Written demonstration of a general understanding and awareness of facility management concepts and issues.  Relevant connections between the applicant's education and the field of facility management 2. Appraisals and Recommendations:  To be prepared by two faculty members (academicians) who are selected by applicant. In the case of applicants with employment history directly related to facility management, one academician and one previous employer. 3. Excellence and Involvement:  Accomplishments and indications of applicant's potential to achieve and excel.  These may include professional memberships, internships, employment, special projects outside of course work, exceptional performance on class projects, awards, honors, and demonstrated dedication to professionalism. 4. Grade Point Average:  Official transcripts required as validation of scholastic achievement. 5. Personal Interview with Selection Committee:  Finalists will be invited to speak with the selections committee to answer questions and comment on the application information submitted.

About the Process of Selection: Upon receipt and evaluation of the applications, finalists will be invited to Kansas City for an interview with the selection committee in late April. The committee will make a final decision shortly thereafter and the successful individual(s) will be notified.

Notice of Potential Renunciation:  A review committee of professionals representing the facility management field in the Kansas City area will select the 2009 Kansas City IFMA Scholar(s). The committee has the privilege of modifying the selection criteria prior to the review and selection process, asking for additional information from applicants, and choosing not to award a scholarship if applicants' qualifications do not favorably compare with their standards as well as those of IFMA. Their judgment will be final.  The 2009 Kansas City IFMA Scholar(s) will receive their scholarship and be recognized at a Chapter Meeting in August, 2009.

Instructions: The attached application form (pages one and two) and the letter of professional intent are to be completed by the applicant and forwarded to the submittal address. A hard copy version of this information that has been prepared on a word processor or typewriter is acceptable providing it follows a comparable format in content and order. A current resume (prepared by the applicant) may supplement the application.

It is the responsibility of the applicant to make arrangements for one copy of his or her official transcript to arrive at the submittal address in compliance with the application deadline.

The applicant is also responsible for two completed appraisals (one copy each) to arrive at the submittal address in compliance with the application deadline.

Supplementary information may also be submitted with the application. However, supplementary information must be concise and relevant. Supplementary information that includes samples of portfolio work (not an entire portfolio) are acceptable, but not necessary, and will not be returned unless accompanied by an appropriate, addressed mailer with adequate postage. Supplemental information on pages not easily managed in a folded format may be referenced on the application and will be reviewed in personal interviews if needed. Applicants are advised that applications are reproduced in black and white for committee review. If applicants prefer to submit color information, hard copy original must be submitted, but may be supplemented by an optional Adobe .PDF file on compact disk.

LETTER OF PROFESSIONAL INTENT: The selection committee realizes that not all Kansas City IFMA Scholar applicants will be enrolled in a facility management curriculum or classes, nor will they necessarily become professional facility managers after graduation. However, a variety of disciplines are representative of the field. Regardless of their academic background, successful facility managers share several overall objectives that include: management and communication skills, problem solving, the ability to provide and maintain workplace effectiveness, an awareness of workplace trends and technology, and dedication to professional ethics and values. Please reference the criteria page of this application form for the scholarship purpose and share your perspective in your two to four page letter of intent.
