Calling all Volunteers for St. Joseph Orphan’s Picnic The Annual St. Joseph Orphan’s Picnic is scheduled for Saturday, August 11th from 12 pm – midnight. Volunteers are needed to help work food areas, assist with booth opening, clean-up and breakdown. Lists of the opportunities are listed below.  Saturday, August 11th: Food Area in shifts of 11-2:30, 2-5:30, 5-8pm  Saturday, August 11th: Booth Opening (need a large group of 30+ volunteers to work a booth in shifts covering 11am-midnight)  Sunday, August 12th: Clean-Up 2-5pm  Aug 20th-Sept 14th: Groups needed to help with picnic breakdown LMPD’s 5th Division Crime Update As of July 11, 2012, the 5th Division has dropped crime down to (-7.1%) and Beat One is almost in the black as crime is dropping fast. LMPD has summer details which have been very successful so far on addressing property and violent crimes. Please remember if you are a victim of a crime to call LMPD to report the issue at 574-7111. School Supplies Needed at St. MAM Every year the St. Matthews Area Ministries (St. MAM) collects new school supplies for families they serve. If you as an individual or as an organization can help them by donating any of the following items, the families and children would be indebted to your support. Items in BOLD are most needed. Pens, pencil pouches or boxes, pocket folders, black erasable pens, rulers, college-ruled paper, pencils, Elmer’s liquid glue, wide-ruled paper, erasers, glue sticks, composition notebooks, yellow highlighters, Fiskars Blunt tipped scissors, steno pads, markers – classic colors, tissues & paper towels, spiral notebooks, crayons, backpacks, 3 subject wide-ruled notebooks, colored pencils, lunch boxes, 3 subject college-ruled notebooks, small pencil sharpeners and hand sanitizer. Olmsted Parks Conservancy News Olmsted Parks Conservancy is looking for friendly, outgoing individuals, 18 years and older, to become Naturalists in Louisville’s Frederick Law Olmsted Parks! They have a variety of fun opportunities and all Naturalists are trained in their area of interest. Individuals can assist with restoration projects, volunteer and/or outreach events. An informational session will be held at the Conservancy’s office on Thursday, August 9 at 7:00pm. Volunteers Needed to Save Trees in Cherokee Park! Invasive vines are killing the trees! Olmsted Parks Conservancy invites individuals and groups to join an emergency Tree Triage effort to release park trees from the strangle hold of invasive vines. Volunteers will meet on August 2 at 6:00pm along the Scenic Loop in Cherokee Park, just 2 | P a g e past Cochran Hill Road. Gloves, tools and guidance will be provided. American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study-3 The American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study-3 To better understand ways to prevent cancer, the American Cancer Society is recruiting men and women across the U.S. and Puerto Rico for a landmark new research study - Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). Enrollment is being made possible in partnership with Jewish Cancer Care, part of KentuckyOne Health, and the YMCA of Greater Louisville during August 7-11, 2012. Individuals may choose to participate if they are willing to make a long-term commitment to the study (which involves completing follow-up surveys periodically over the next 20-30 years), are between the ages of 30 and 65 years old and have never been diagnosed with cancer.
