Commonwealth Corps Quaboag Valley Community Development Corporation Western Mass. CDC Collaborative Publicity Assistant/Outreach Worker

The mission of the Commonwealth Corps is to engage Massachusetts residents of all ages and backgrounds in direct service to rebuild communities, address unmet community needs, and increase volunteerism. More than 250 Commonwealth Corps members will serve up to twelve months in full- time or part-time capacities at 36 designated nonprofits and public entities. What they have in common is a desire to put their talents and ideas to use in the service of their communities and the Commonwealth.

The Quaboag Valley Community Development Corporation is a private nonprofit established to improve the quality of life in the Quaboag Valley by addressing the economic, environmental and social needs of its residents while maintaining the integrity and character of each community in the region. It serves 15 towns in west-central Massachusetts. As lead community for the Western Mass. CDC Collaborative, it coordinates Commonwealth Corps activities among six community based agencies that provide economic, environmental, social, housing, agricultural and municipal services to their respective member communities. The WMCDC collaborative serves 71 communities in western Mass. including the cities of Springfield and Holyoke.

Valley CDC, one of the six CDCs in the Western Mass CDC Collaborative, is a private nonprofit established to empower low and moderate income people and minorities to control and improve the quality of their lives. Valley CDC accomplishes this through the development of affordable housing, providing economic opportunities and encouraging community leadership. It serves the communities of Northampton, Easthampton, Amherst, and Hadley.

The Position:

The Publicity Assistant/Outreach Worker may be a Full Time, Part Time or Flex Time position, depending upon the needs and resources of the Site Partners. The Program will run from September 1, 2009 – August 31, 2010. The following schedule outlines the options available. Valley CDC is offering: _1_ Full Time, _0_Part Time and _0_ Flex time positions.

*Bonus is awarded at the completion of service, provided all contracted hours are completed. Weekly pay and bonus are subject to state and federal taxes but not to state or federal unemployment compensation.

1 Position Description: List of potential responsibilities/activities

. Phone/email contact with customers, clients or other stakeholders on a daily basis. The Publicity Assistant will explain programs, answer questions, register program participants and make appropriate referrals on the phone or via email. . Create or assist in the creation of promotional and informational materials that are released by the organization. These will include press releases, flyers and brochures, newsletters and website content. . Become involved in the physical dissemination of promotional materials, by interacting with other entities; this will include visiting them and getting to know staff personally. . Assist in the organization of programs, trainings and community events. The PA will be called upon to interact with other organizations, entities and municipal or state offices to coordinate sites, agendae, refreshments, logistics and other details of CDC programs. . Recruit, train and/or supervise community volunteers. Volunteers may be generated to work on specific projects or they may become involved in ongoing CDC activities. . Speak in public forums, including Selectmen’s meetings, CDC Board meetings and civic groups’ meetings (such as Lions or Rotary) in order to promote the CDC and its programs, to fundraise or to solicit input from these groups on the CDC’s impact. . Additional areas designated by the CDC that further the goals identified above.
