Advice from gov.uk on writing for the web

"Meet the user need:

People don’t usually read text unless they want information. When you write for the web, start with the same question every time: what does the user want to know?

Meeting that need means being

 specific

 informative

 clear and to the point"

Links

The Government digital standards on links recommend:

"Front-load your link text with the relevant terms and make them active and specific:

 front-loading - putting links at the start of sentences rather than in the middle (and at the top of a page where possible)

 active - for example, avoiding the passive of ".... can be found here (with a link on here)

 specific - goes to the item, not a ‘general’ page"

Please note: if your article includes reference to a pdf on an external website, link to it there. There is no need to download and send as an attachment with this form.

Editorial licence

The editorial team will, where appropriate, edit submitted articles to ensure compliance with digital standards.
