CLASSROOM NEWS:  LITERACY: This month we will be finishing our Journeys theme! During September, we read a variety of literature related to Journeys, specifically focusing on the Iditarod and the Titanic. The students have been doing a fabulous job with the daily Five and working independently while the teachers meet with reading groups. Keep up the good work! This month we will be reading the novel, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane and participating in a fun Mystery Unit. We will be analyzing the aspects of the mystery genre as well as reading many leveled mystery books.  MATH: Next week, we will begin our second unit in math, which focuses on Multiplication and Division. Here are some skills that students should be able to do by the end of Chapter 3:  Write a fact family for an array.  Solve division problems like 30÷6 by using subtraction  Solve comparison problems by drawing a diagram and writing an equation  Use properties to multiply three numbers, like 7x2x4 (Commutative Property of Multiplication and Associative Property of Multiplication)  Find factors of a whole number, like 32 Also, beginning in October, we will be focusing on our basic multiplication facts to make sure students have full mastery. We will focus on two facts per week, beginning with x2 and x3. Students will take a pre-test on Monday and then will bring home the list of any facts that need to be studied. Please have your child review these facts every day. Then, there will be a post-test on Friday.  SCIENCE: In October, we will be studying Microworlds. In this unit, the students will learn the parts of a microscope as well as how to use it correctly. They will also learn how to observe, record their observations in writing and drawings. At the end of the unit, they will be challenged with observing many living and non-living organisms under the microscope. Reminders:  Please continue to sign or initial your child’s assignment notebook each night during first quarter.  Students should be completing a nightly word sort to practice their spelling patterns for the week. Please let us know if you have questions. Words Their Way tests will always be on Fridays.  Native American Field Trip will be on October 9th from 9am-2pm. Please make sure your child dresses weather appropriate and brings a sack lunch.  Please see the attached note regarding Pumpkin Math on October 30th. We are looking for parent volunteers as well as donations for this fun activity!  The Halloween Party and Parade will be on October 31st.  The end of 1st Quarter is on October 17th.
