CLASS LISTS FOR 2014-2015 The teachers and I will begin the process of forming class lists for the 2014-2015 school year. Teachers will use their knowledge of your student to create classroom placements that ensure balance for optimal teaching and learning. We invite you to share your thoughts about your student’s needs with his or her teacher; however, we ask that you do not request a specific teacher.

The current classroom teachers, in consultation with the principal, will be responsible for determining class lists for next year, using the following guidelines:  Parent’s perceptions of their child’s learning style and individual needs  Student’s level of academic achievement  Student’s behavior  Number of boys and girls in a classroom  Number of students requiring special education or other modifications in a classroom  Students requiring special health consideration  Interactions between specific students – positive or not-so-positive Consideration of all these factors will yield class lists. The final decision on all placements rests with the principal.

CHINESE sì yuè yǔ dài lai wǔ yuè huā 四 月 雨 带 来 五 月 花! April showers bring May flowers! In April, we had fun learning how to use chopsticks and make dumplings. Have you tried the family project—making creative dumplings? Do you like dumplings? In May, we will learn more about Chinese foods and the famous story – The Journey to the West. If you are interested, you can download the app: The Journey to the West by Rye Studio. Last but not least, don’t forget our Chinese Night May 22nd!

In 2010, Wisconsin elected to join the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium to measure students’ career and college readiness. The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (Smarter Balanced) is a state-led consortium working to develop next-generation assessments aligned with the Common Core State Standards that accurately measure student progress toward college- and career-readiness. Please visit any Smarter Balanced website to learn more and to take a practice test – student success depends on parents and teachers working together.

IB LEARNER PROFILE This month’s learner profile characteristic is risk-taker. Risk-takers have the courage to try new things. They are independent and confident. They like to explore new roles, ideas and strategies. Risk-takers are brave and willing to defend their ideas. Look for the yellow form in your Wednesday folder so you can tell us how your child demonstrates the quality of being a risk-taker. Nomination forms are due at the end of the month. MYON This summer, read what you want to read. Imagine fairy tales, scary stories, and everything in between. Explore tall tales and fun facts from more than 5,000 enhanced digital books on MyOn! Participate in a summer reading challenge designed to motivate your child to find the magic in reading – the challenge runs from May 12-August 25, 2014 and winners are based on the most time spent reading. Your students will be bringing home their login information (their ID is their login and password); MyOn can be accessed from any computer or mobile device! Questions? Contact Mrs. Sheard or Mrs. Aguilar for more information.

CAMP INVENTION Camp Invention is coming to Kenosha this summer June 16-20 at Somers Elementary and July 28-Aug 1 at Whittier Elementary! Camp Invention is a unique, hands-on experience that blends fun with science, technology, and invention! Students going into grades 1-6 are invited to participate in this fast-paced, one-of-a-kind experience that is supported by the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame. Each day, children participate in four continuous modules that place them in settings like a strange planet, a faraway island or deep under sea. Children use their creativity, imagination and inventive thinking skills to solve problems within each environment, building on what they learned the previous day. Using up cycled materials brought from home, they could be challenged to rebuild a rocket ship, cross a river of hot lava, rescue sea creatures or assume another mission. Through hands-on fun, children get excited about science while working together as a team. Though activities will vary depending on the program selected, each one is designed to educate, entertain and inspire. For more information, contact Director Sarah Aguilar at [email protected] or check your Wednesday folder for a flyer.
