Content/Presentation/Demonstration Outline Instruct students that a power steering pump is a hydraulic assist that provides an assist to the steering system. Inform students that safety is very important when working with hydraulics. Power steering pumps can produce pressures up to 2000 PSI. Instruct students that in most cases the power steering pump is driven by the belt, therefore the mounting of the pump will be very close to the front of the engine where there is belt access. Some pumps may be in other locations and electric motors can drive them Instruct students to allow the engine to cool. Instruct students that removal of the drive belt is the first step. Next, inform the students to disconnect the suction hose and place a small plastic bag over the end, securing it with a rubber band. Inform students to observe the pump for any switches that may be attached as these will need to be disconnected next. Next inform the students to disconnect the pumps pressure feed tube. A union bolt or a banjo type bolt will likely secure this tube. Instruct students that a sealing washer may be under the bolt head so be careful not to lose that part. Instruct students to remove the pump assembly per the service information at this time. Instruct the students to inspect the pump seals, gaskets and pulley and replace any parts needed Instruct students that when an old power steering pump is replaced, it is usually necessary to transfer the original pulley onto the new pump assembly. Some pulleys are retained simply by a nut others are pressed on to the drive shaft of the pump and may require special pullers to remove. Instruct students to be sure and note the original position of the pulley on the shaft before removal. This is a crucial step in order to retain proper belt alignment once the new pump is re-installed. Finally instruct the students that the pump should be reinstalled in reverse order of removal. Also inform students that mounting bolts should be torqued to proper specification and the pump should be bled with the fluid filled to the correct level for the final step.
