Texas Pharmacy Congress Report August 21, 2013

Since the last meeting of the Texas Pharmacy Congress, TSHP has:

 Conducted elections for the offices of TSHP President-Elect (designate) and Secretary-Elect. To be installed at the 2014 Annual Seminar are: o Shane Greene, Pharm.D. BCPS, clinician-educator at TTUHSC School of Pharmacy’s Dallas campus, and o Steven Knight, Pharm.D. BCPS, transplant pharmacist, Methodist Dallas Medical Center, Dallas.

 Held meetings of two special committees to review and re-evaluate the TSHP Clinical Skills/Disease State Management Competitions and Poster Competition. Both programs have grown exponentially in recent years and adjustments are needed to allow for continuing success.

 Continued planning for the April 11-13, 2014 TSHP Annual Seminar, which will be held at the Westin Galleria Hotel in Houston. The 2014 Alcáldé program will be held April 9-10, in a format similar to the 2013 program due to space limitations.

 Conducted a membership survey concerning hospital internship needs and issues. The results will be presented to the August 20 meeting of the Joint Committee on Internship Programs.

 Encouraged members to contact Texas’ 2 Senators to support S. 959, the federal compounding legislation pending in the Senate.

 Held the annual leadership retreat of the TSHP Student Section Executive Committee, August 10-11 in Austin to begin planning for the year’s activities.

 Published the electronic Spring edition of the TSHP Journal.

 Began accepting applications for the position of TSHP Executive Director. The deadline for applicants is August 23. The goal is to make a final decision on the new executive at an October 25-26, 2013 TSHP Board meeting, with employment to begin as soon as possible after that date.

 Issued a call for grant applications for the 2013 TSHP R&E Foundation C.A. B. Bond Memorial Grant program.

 Published two issues of the TSHP Drug Info Alert in conjunction with The University of Texas College of Pharmacy and UT Health Science Center Drug Information Service on the topics of MERS-CoV and Cyclospora infections.

 Announced that the 2015 Annual Seminar will be held in San Antonio at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center and Hilton Palacio del Rio Hotel.

 Happily announced to members that they could begin removing pharmacists’ licenses from the hallways in their hospitals (except for the PIC’s) on September 1 following the signing of SB 869 into law.

 Held initial meetings of all TSHP Councils and Committees, beginning the new organizational year and continuing work on the TSHP Strategic Plan.
