PROFESSIONAL HISTORY

Hired as a flight officer with United Airlines, September 1979. Over 12,000 flight hours.

 United Airlines Line Pilot  September 1979 – April 1988 Served as second officer on the B-727, then first officer on the B-727 and B-737.

 United Airlines Boeing-737 Check Airman  April 1988 – December 1994 The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) appointed me as a Designated Examiner on the B-737. Also flew as a B-737 line pilot during this time, obtaining the rank of captain in March 1991. Responsible for administering B-737 type ratings and Initial Operating Experience to UAL pilots.

 United Airlines Boeing-777 Asst. Chief Pilot and Check Airman  July 1996 – November 1998 UAL was the launch customer for the B-777, and as such, was involved in the certification of the airplane. I had the opportunity to fly proving flights with Boeing test pilots prior to the introduction of the B-777 into service. I worked closely with the FAA developing the flight training programs for UAL’s B-777 crews. I became an FAA Designated Examiner, responsible for issuing B-777 type ratings to UAL crews.

 United Airlines Flight Manager – Denver Flight Operations  November 1998 – January 2000 Gained domicile flight management experience. My duties included supporting the line pilots, working with other divisions (station ops, customer service, line maintenance, ramp service) to ensure the Denver hub performed safely and efficiently. Worked closely with United’s Training Center to address the training needs of the Denver based pilots.

 United Airlines Manager of the Captains’ Development Course  January 2000 – March 2001 Responsible for the conception, design, and implementation of UAL’s first course for initial captains. The primary purpose of the CDC is to reinforce leadership skills, focusing on customer service, team building, and the asset management responsibilities of our pilots. James F. Russell

 United Airlines Chief Pilot Boeing-737 Fleet  March 2001 – March 2002 Responsible for all pilot training/checking on the B-737 at United Airlines and the associated budget. Responsible for the training manuals, the training syllabi, the B-737 flight manual, 2 flight deck procedural trainers, and 5 full-motion (6 axis) simulators. Responsible to the FAA for upholding the highest training and checking standards for the various B-737 courses at United Airlines. All of United’s B737 ground school instructors, simulator instructors, and check airmen reported to me.

 United Airlines Chief Pilot – Denver Flight Operations  March 2002 – June 2004 Responsible for over 1200 Denver based pilots. Duties included supporting the line pilots, working with other divisions (station ops, customer service, line maintenance, ramp service) to ensure the Denver hub performed safely and efficiently. Responsible for the Denver Flight Operations’ budget. Worked closely with United’s Training Center to address the training needs of the Denver based pilots. Numerous PR functions, including sales visits to UAL’s top corporate accounts. High-level involvement with UAL’s new low cost operation…”TED.”

 United Airlines Manager – Flight Safety Programs  June 2004 – September 2009 Responsible for UAL’s Flight Safety Awareness Program, Operational Reporting Program, and Security Reporting Program. Also responsible for UAL’s Flight Operations Quality Assurance program and Dispatch Safety Awareness Program. Worked closely with the FAA to ensure United complies with all regulatory requirements pertaining to Flight Operations. Worked with other divisions within United to correct operational/safety issues pointed out in reports from pilots, mechanics, flight attendants, and dispatchers.

 United Airlines Northwest Region Chief Pilot  September 2009 – May 2010 Presently responsible for the Flight Operations division in San Francisco and Seattle. The majority of the flights from these hubs are Pacific international flights. My responsibilities include flight safety, schedule reliability, maintenance reliability, coordination with Air Traffic Control, and the accountability of approximately 1400 pilots. I work closely with leaders from other operating divisions, i.e. Customer Service, Maintenance, Medical, Ramp, and Building Maintenance.
