Supplemental Budget Preparation

Hope Appelbaum Ed 417 Dr. Helms Fall 2001 Below you will find a list of supplemental social studies materials that I am suggesting for purchase. The materials will be beneficial when I teach American and World History at the upper elementary level.

VIDEO TAPES

1. Ancient Civilizations for Children Series (1 set) $269.55 This set of 9 videocassettes will provide the students with a chance to visit and explore the wonders of past cultures. Each kid friendly video offers “live- action footage” as the viewers help to unravel the mysteries of each civilization.

2. Around the World in 80 Days $29.00 This video will provide the students with an opportunity to float around the world in a hot air balloon. This video is a classic, which is based on the Jules Verne novel.

3. Early Explorers (1 set) $632.00 This set of 7 videocassettes will provide the students an overview of key topics ranging from the beginning of the age of exploration, Viking Explorers and the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus.

4. This is America, Charlie Brown (1 set) $99.00 This set of 7 videocassettes will provide the students with an animated cartoon sequence through American history. The characters of the lovable comic strip interact with the people, places and events of American history.

ENRICHMENT READING

1. A Street Through Time $16.95 This hardback book will be useful for the students while they are learning about World history and about constructing time lines. The book traces European history from the Stone Age through present day by focusing on the changes that occur on one street during 14 distinct eras.

2. American Portraits (1 set) $62.00 This set of 11 paperback books will be used for enhancement while the students are learning American history. They will travel with young teens as they struggle through historical events that have formed our nation. COMPUTER PROGRAMS

1. Carmen Sandiego’s Great Chase Through Time $165.95 This lab pack of 6 CD-ROMs, guide and book focus on world history and geography. The CD-ROMs incite students to use their reasoning and reference skills to find Carmen during 3000 years of world history.

2. The Civil War $199.95 This lab pack of 5 CD-ROMs and guide will place students somewhere in the United States between the years of 1820 and 1865. Students will travel to states that had a significant impact on the outcome of the Civil War.

GAMES AND SIMULATIONS

1. Pilgrims $50.00 This simulation involves the entire class. Students assume the roles of the Pilgrims so they can better understand the hardships they endured during the first year at the Plymouth Colony.

2. Souvenirs $19.95 This educational board game is useful in the improvement of the students knowledge of history and geography. Players must answer a question about a continent and the player with the most souvenirs at the end of the game wins.

1. 10 American History Plays for the Classroom $12.95 The 10 plays are plays set to highlight American history. Each play is supplied with background information and activity suggestions.

2. Cooking Up U.S. History $24.00 This wonderful cookbook mixes more than 150 recipes from America’s past to related historical eras. The book also includes a bibliography of related fiction and nonfiction works.

3. Idea Bank: History $38.00 This set of 4 activity books is filled with economical activities that are focused on four ancient civilizations. Each book contains handouts, background information and ideas for different extension activities.
