It’s time to suspend your disbelief and open your mind. We’re going on a magical journey to Alchemy Island.

Can you find the gold hidden deep in the island’s mysterious landscape? The only way is to study the map, unravel the riddle and begin your adventure.

On the way, you must do all you can to learn about gold and master the ancient art of alchemy. Be creative and try to impress the island’s team of ace alchemists! Will they praise your scientific expertise?

What if there was a video game version of Alchemy Island? Could you compose a stunning soundtrack to bring this mysterious landscape to life?

You’ve got your map, coordinates and everything else you need to make your way across Alchemy Island. Don’t forget to pack your imagination!

Got your suitcase ready? Then let the journey begin…

How to Help: Discuss aspects of the topic with your child. Watch any relevant programmes on television. Help with any research homework given. Literacy: During this half-term, we will be looking at a variety of text types. Initially, we will be focussing on writing a fantasy narrative piece. Following this, we will look at non-chronological reports and finally poetry, including soliloquies.

We will continue our weekly spellings, grammar and punctuation sessions, looking at the use of different punctuation marks, spelling patterns, topic words and class issues in spelling whenever they arise.

How to help. Please help your child learn their spellings. Check the home work they have done and guide them where necessary. Encourage them to read daily, but at least three times a week and please sign their reading diary when they have read.

Numeracy: During our numeracy lessons, we will be working through a number of aspects.

We will look at using and understanding place value, counting backwards and forwards in powers of 10, rounding whole and decimal numbers and how to solve both number and word problems, centered around these areas. We will also cover multiplying and dividing whole and deci- mal numbers by powers of 10. We will focus on converting between decimals and percentages. Our mental maths skills practice and develop- ment of multiplication knowledge will be ongoing. Finally, we will learn about different units of measure and methods to solve problems in- cluding measuring weight, length, volume and capacity.

How to help. Assist where needed during their homework. Check and discuss any problems. Practise multiplication tables and mental maths calculations to increase speed and accuracy every week.

Science: We will be focusing on working scientifically, making predictions, recording findings and interpreting results. Our main focus will be to look at the changes in properties of different materials, how these take place and the cause and effect of these changes.

How to Help: Try to discuss everyday occurrences that are connected with our topics. Watch programmes related to our topic.

Physical Education: During this half term, the children will be focussing on football, with a specific focus on working as a team and thinking tactically. How to Help: Ensure your child has their full P.E kit in school every day, clearly labelled. In the interests of safety long hair must always be tied back and jewellery must not be worn. Only ear studs are allowed and these must be taped over.

Religious Education: This term we shall be looking at the bible story of creation, Genesis 1. We shall look at the story carefully and discuss its meaning, making clear connections between the story and the Christian idea of God the Creator. We will also discuss and investigate the apparent conflict between the story and a scientific interpretation of Creation.

PSHE: This term we will be focussing on British values, especially those of democracy, respect and tolerance of others. We shall discuss some of these further is assemblies, however our Assembly Value at the moment is Perseverence.

Spanish:The children will be practising their speaking and listening skills through learning the basic vocabulary and conversational language that would come in use if visiting Spain.

How to help: Encourage your child to speak in Spanish at home and talk to you about what they have been learning.

ICT:

This term, the children will be looking at digital photography and creating games.

How to help: Were possible allow your child to use a computer or tablet to complete homework or play educational games so that they are familiar with many of the skills required.
