Guest Speaker : Dr Donald Nixon Rotary Club of Edwardstown Giving Orphans a chance in West Africa Under the Mango Tree Meeting 2907 Dr. Donald Nixon was born in Ireland but at an early age he wanted Tonight to become a volunteer teacher and soon found his way to Ghana in
th West Africa. It was here he became fascinated or as he said July 14 obsessed with Africa. He was located at a school near the Southern Bob Dixon –Short extremity of the Sahara Desert. He remained there for two years. All about me The students extremely happy, receptive and welcoming. This was Chair - Joseph Masika in contrast to the Irish students he had left behind. After he left the
st school he still had the desire to return which took effect after some July 21 forty years. This time when making enquiries he found that the Linda Sweeney – RC of Somerton Park bureaucracy had become so intense it was much harder to become a Prosthetic Limbs volunteer. The only given was the NGO would arrange a visa but Chair – Bob Dixon Short all other expenses had to be me t by any volunteer eg living costs
th registration, and residency. Many volunteer teachers had to leave July 28 after a six month stint. This time he was located in a remote area Angela P- Women’s Shelter near the middle of the country. It was there he met the Headmaster Ninko Kurtangga Patpannga known as Bishop. The school was built by The Bishop who was Chair Libby Carey part of a Pentecostal Church. The Bishop had set up the school at his expense. There were two boarding wings. The school caters for President Clair would like apologies, visitors, make ups etc., texted or orphans as well as parented children. The question was posed as to messaged to her please on 0421846246 by 10am Tuesday. Alternatively put your known absent dates in the diary at the Tuesday meeting why the school was started. Bishop who spent his afternoons in his office under the mango tree because of the extreme heat explained CONGRATULATIONS that many children used to frequent the town market place where they would try and get some money for their very existence. He 19th July Liz Haynes Birthday saw the need that these children needed to have an education. 19th July Colin Ames Induction These students are here to learn. Today the school has an enrolment 19th July Mike Tucker Birthday of 200 students of which some 2/3rds do not even have access to TV. Don asked whether the Club members could support in a garage sale so that much needed funds could be given to the school This Bulletin is available on line at www.edwardstownrotary.org thus bypassing the bureaucratic nightmare. Thank you Don for a most interesting talk.
