She was baptized 24 early in life and lived a life that she thought was pleasing to God 25 Almighty. Mrs. McFarland was educated in the public schools of 26 Darlington County. After graduating as valedictorian from 27 Rosenwald High School in 1957, she moved to New York City for 28 work where she met her husband, David McFarland, from 29 Hartsville, who had moved to Pennsylvania after leaving the U.S. 30 Air Force in 1960. The couple married on June 29, 1962 and were 31 blessed by this union for over fiftyone years. This union produced 32 three children, Davita McFarland Malloy, Derrick McFarland, and 33 David McFarland, III; and 34 35 Whereas, the couple moved to Washington, DC in 1967 where 36 Mrs. McFarland attended the University of the District of 37 Columbia. In 1973, Mr. and Mrs. McFarland moved back to 38 Hartsville, South Carolina where Mrs. McFarland began work in 39 the Darlington County School District at Butler High School. After 40 her move back to Hartsville, Mrs. McFarland graduated from 41 Coker College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and 42 later graduated from Francis Marion University with a Master of

[1238] 2 1 Arts degree in Education. She went to work at Hartsville High 2 School as a guidance counselor in 1978 and worked there until her 3 retirement in 2003; and 4 5 Whereas, in addition to her job with the school district, she gave 6 many hours back to her community through her involvement as a 7 board member of the YMCA of the Upper Pee Dee and the 8 Darlington County Library Board. She was also active in her home 9 church, Jerusalem Baptist Church as a deaconess. She served on 10 the budget committee and as superintendant of the Sunday School 11 program at Jerusalem Baptist Church. She started the Jerusalem 12 Book Club and the Rosenwald Scholarship Fund. Mrs. McFarland 13 was also a member of the Chi Lambda Omega Chapter of the 14 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; and 15 16 Whereas, Mrs. McFarland is the mother in law of Senator Gerald 17 Malloy. She worked tirelessly for his election and engaged in all 18 aspects of his service in his district; and 19 20 Whereas, Mrs. McFarland was a classic problemsolver and 21 guidance counselor, solving everyone’s problems and planning 22 their careers. She loved family reunions and stayed very close to 23 her family. She started weekly prayer conference calls among 24 family members. The love of her life was her children and her 25 grandchildren. She leaves a wonderful legacy in South Carolina 26 through her children and grandchildren and all who knew her; and 27 28 Whereas, services to remember Mrs. McFarland will be held 29 Thursday, April 17, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Jerusalem Baptist Church 30 in Hartsville. Mrs. McFarland will be entombed at Darlington 31 Memorial Gardens; and 32 33 Whereas, Mrs. McFarland leaves behind many loving friends and 34 family members, including her loving husband, David McFarland, 35 Jr. of Hartsville; her children, Senator Gerald and Davita Malloy of 36 Hartsville; Derrick and Lorraine McFarland of Lexington; and 37 David McFarland, III of Irmo; four grandchildren, Gerald D. 38 Malloy, Jonathan D. Malloy, Jordan M. Malloy and Morgan D. 39 Malloy; siblings, Ms. Doris Whitelocke of Flushing, New York, 40 Mr. Albert Coleman of Society Hill, Ms. Sylvia Jeffers of 41 Burtonville, Maryland, Mr. Leroy Coleman of Suitland, Maryland, 42 Mr. Matthew and Vivian Coleman of Louisburg, North Carolina, 43 and Ms. Marilyn Coleman of Burtonsville, Maryland; four aunts,

[1238] 3 1 Ms. Juanita Tyler of Baltimore, Maryland, Mrs. Willie Rose 2 Snipes of Stone Mountain, Georgia, Mrs. Inez Johnson of Society 3 Hill, and Mrs. Marie Swinney of Society Hill; one uncle, Mr. 4 James and Dorothy Coleman of Baltimore, Maryland, and many 5 nieces, nephews, cousins and inlaws. She will be greatly missed. 6 Now, therefore, 7 8 Be it resolved by the Senate: 9 10 That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, express the 11 profound sympathy of the members of the South Carolina Senate 12 upon the passing of Juanita Coleman McFarland of Hartsville and 13 to extend the deepest sympathy to her family and many friends. 14 15 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 16 the family of Juanita Coleman McFarland. 17 XX 18
