Instructions following: SINUS SURGERY
This letter is designed to help answer many of the commonly asked questions about your surgery. Please SAVE IT for future reference during your recovery.
1. If you have not already been given a post-operative appointment, call our office to obtain one. The office telephone number is: 301-860-0985 (Bowie) and 410-535-6975 (Prince Frederick.)
2. Should you have any questions after your surgery, please call the office during regular office hours. If you urgently need to reach the doctor after office hours or on weekends, call the answering service at 301-855-1059 or 410-535-8202. Your call will be answered by a paging operator who will contact the doctor to return your call as soon as possible.
3. You may experience a fever (99-102 degrees) for a few days after your operation. Take Tylenol (not Motrin, Advil or Aspirin) as needed.
4. There are no dietary restrictions after this operation. You may have nausea for the first 2 days; if so, drink plenty of liquids. Sometimes, chewing on hard foods (such as apples, raw carrots, etc.) may increase the pain in and/or bleeding from your nose. If so, avoid these chewy foods.
5. You should avoid all strenuous activity for 7 days after this operation. In particular, bending and lifting should be avoided. You may feel more comfortable propped up on pillows rather than lying flat.
6. DO NOT blow your nose. If you need to sneeze, try to keep your mouth open so that the sneeze comes out of your mouth.
7. You will have a heavy mucous drainage from your nose for the entire week after your operation. This will be bloody for the first several days. This is normal.
8. Dissolvable packing may be used in this operation. Dissolvable packing will disappear in about 2 days. Any nasal packing (dissolvable or non-dissolvable) can cause pressure in the nose and sinus area.
9. Smoking and alcohol should both be avoided after surgery for at least one week.
