- Next league race – Kolonnade Retail Park – 11 November - Agapé AGM – 18 November

Editorial

Please remember to confirm your attendance to our AGM as we must make provision for catering.

This coming week is the last league race for the year. Please attend. Kindly remember to complete the entry slip in full, i.e. your name, surname, age, gender and province (AGN).

There is a possibility that our gazebo will not be at the race as the EXCO and race committee together with Sportsvendo will be having a post-race indaba. We are still trying to arrange that the trailer will be at the race.

We have upgraded our trailer, the current one is now thirty years old. Please have a look at it, there is a photo under the photo corner.

Training/Health snippets

Dropping out of a race Some runners feel that dropping out of a race is an absolute no-no. It is not a great idea, particularly if dropping out is associated with not wanting to keep going when it starts to hurt. However, there are some legitimate times when abandoning a race is acceptable. One is when an injury has been sustained, and continuing to race may cause complications or additional injury. Another legitimate time is when an illness or existing health problem, such as exercise-induced asthma, turns a race into a struggle for survival.

People have run through a bad stitch to avoid dropping out of a race, only to aggravate the stitch to such a de- gree that training is curtailed for several weeks or even months. It’s better to abandon the race than to put your future health in jeopardy.

A note to those who might consider dropping out of a cross-country race – never assume anything. A runner, who is struggling along as the sixth runner on a team, well back in the pack and feeling pretty dejected and worthless to the team, may decide to drop out. The runner often justifies this by saying, “I’m not scoring in our top five, so my place won’t affect scoring anyway.” Moments after the runner drops out, one of the top five run- ners on the same team, steps into a hole and is forced out of the race by injury. Not having the sixth runner as a backup becomes a major factor in the team scoring, and if there is no seventh runner, the team is completely out of the team race.

Feeling sorry for yourself is not a good reason to drop out of a race. On the other hand, avoiding a major setback that could occur if you continue in a race can be a legitimate reason to stop running. (Source: Daniel’s Running Formula)

Your thought for the week

Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment!

Your smile for the week

She was in the bathroom, putting on her makeup, under the watchful eyes of her young granddaughter as she'd done many times before. After she applied her lipstick and started to leave, the little one said, "But Granma, you forgot to kiss the toilet paper good-bye!"

My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, "62." He was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, "Did you start at 1?"

After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more rambunctious, her patience grew thin. Final- ly, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the three-year-old say with a trembling voice, "Who was THAT?"

A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like: "We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods." The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in. At last she said, "I sure wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!"

I didn't know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out some- thing and ask what color it was. She would tell me and was always correct. It was fun for me, so I continued. At last she headed for the door, saying sagely, "Grandma, I think you should try to figure out some of this yourself!"

3 When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep from attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, "It's no use, Grandpa. The mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights."

A second grader came home from school and said to her grandmother, "Grandma, guess what? We learned how to make babies today." The grandmother, more than a little surprised, tried to keep her cool. "That's interesting," she said, "How do you make babies?" "It's simple," replied the girl. "You just change 'y' to 'i' and add 'es'."

Something to ponder over / something spiritual

I AM A CHRISTIAN By Maya Angelou When I say.... 'I am a Christian" I'm not shouting "I'm clean living" I'm whispering, "I was lost," Now I'm found and forgiven

When I say… “I am a Christian" I don't speak of this with pride I'm confessing that I stumble and need CHRIST to be my guide

When I say... "I am a Christian" I'm not trying to be strong. I'm professing that I'm weak and need HIS strength to carry on

When I say... 'I am a Christian" I'm not bragging of success. I'm admitting l have failed and need God to clean my mess

When I say... 'I am a Christian" I'm not claiming to be perfect, my flaws are far too visible but God believes I am worth it

When I say... "I am a Christian" I still feel the sting of pain, I have my share of heartaches, so I call upon His name

When I say...'I am a Christian" I'm not holier than thou, I’m just a simple sinner who received God's good grace, somehow
