Commonly Confused Words: Mnemonics Activity (HONORS and GT)

Name: ______Pd: ______

Directions: Create an acrostic, rhyme, or other WORD mnemonic device for each commonly confused pair of words. The first one is done for you, but the more strange your device, the more likely you are to remember it, so be CREATIVE! These should be your unique ideas!

1. Altar vs. alter: Altar has an “a” and so does “pray” (Meaning people PRAY in the place that has an ALTAR, not an alter)

2. Altogether vs. all together

3. Anyone vs. any one

4. Biased vs. bias

5. Every day vs. Everyday

6. Fewer vs. Less

7. Prejudiced vs. Prejudice

8. Passed vs. Past

9. Principal vs. Principle

10. Alot vs. a lot

NOW: Come up with a device for another class you are taking. For instance, I used mnemonics to remember the periodic table of elements, and I will never forget that PB is LEAD because I used peanut butter as my mnemonic. It made sense for me because peanut butter is heavy in your stomach like LEAD. Commonly Confused Words: Mnemonics Activity CP
