Biomes Project

Mr. Grabill’s Biomes Project

Overview: Your assigned group will work together with one other Science class to create a biome that includes climate, animals, and plants.

Table Name Assigned Biome Nerodia Tundra Bufo Grassland Tamias Desert Buteo Tropical Rainforest Larix Deciduous Forest Castor Coniferous Forest

Jobs: Each group member will need to participate in the planning and construction of the project as well as be responsible for their group job. 1. Materials manager- responsible for making sure all group members are assigned materials to bring, bring the materials, put away materials, and store materials 2. Design architect- responsible for gathering group input to decide on and draw a rough sketch of the group’s construction 3. Time manager- responsible for making sure ALL people are on task and let the group know goals for each day 4. Teacher-Student Liaison- responsible for ALL of the group’s communication with Mr. Grabill. This person is the only person who can communicate with Mr. Grabill. 5. Information manager- responsible for the handling the research information the group has found regarding their biome. This includes the information for the table/graph. *Please note every group member is responsible for researching, this person is responsible for collecting the research from everyone and leading the group in putting together the chart or graph.

Assignment: 1. CLIMATE: a. Plan and create the substrate – include at least 2 landforms. Inform the plant and animal group of the landforms RIGHT AWAY so they can determine what to make. The substrate will include the soil. b. Create a line graph of climate- the x-axis should be months, the right y-axis should be precipitation, the left y-axis should be temperature. You will need to research to find the information. This graph will be part of the Biome poster (see below)

2. PLANTS a. Based on the substrate the climate group creates, choose appropriate plants to include in the biome. Refer to the chart for the requirements. Biome Required plants to include Tundra Lichens, shrubs, moss, stunted willows Grasslands Scattered trees, grasses Desert Cacti, trees if have oasis, shrubs Tropical Canopy, middle, groundcover Rainforest Deciduous 2 types of trees, determine season (with climate Forest group), groundcover Coniferous 2 types of trees, groundcover Forest

b. Create a chart that includes the scientific plant name and a picture from a magazine or Internet, describe the physical characteristics, describe the habitat in which the plant grows, and limiting factors (such as consumers). See chart below for example. Scientific Physical Habitat Limiting plant name & Description Description Factors picture

3. ANIMALS: a. Decide (based on the landforms that the climate group creates) what animals your group will include in the biome. You will need to include 3 primary consumers and 3 secondary consumers. b. Create the animals using materials your group or Mr. Grabill will provide. You will need to create the animals yourself using your creativity. c. Research and create a chart that includes the animal’s name, picture, habitat and diet. The picture needs to be out of a magazine or off the Internet. The chart will be set up as follows and will be included in the biomes poster: Animal (scientific Habitat Diet name &picture)

POSTER- Each biome will create a poster that will hang above the biome project. The poster will have a NEAT title of the biome, the climate graph, the animal chart, and the plant chart.
