Students must have met Accuplacer or TAKS Commended requirements. Each student must register and have a UTB ID or Sting number (last year’s is good). Be sure to read the UTB Guidelines before you sign and accept them. Username and password are required in order to connect to the UTB Blackboard (Bb). Do your best to find these from previous coursework or contact the UTB Helpdesk. Helpdesk: 822-4357 Mon-Fri 8AM – 5PM Library room 121 [email protected]

Syllabus, Grading Formula, and Content Mini-lecture Notes and Written Homework (14 HWs by Midterm + 13 HWs after Midterm = 27 HWs at 10 points each) Written HWs must be quality work to earn points. Online Labs – 1 scheduled attempt (27 labs at 10 points each) Online HW – 2 attempts during a 4-day window (27 HWs at 15 points each) Online Quizzes – 2 attempts during a 4-day window (12 Quizzes at 60 points each) Online Midterm – 1 scheduled attempt (2 parts at 150 points each) Online Final – 1 scheduled attempt (2 parts at 150 points each) Students must earn at least 360 points out of the 600 points from the Midterm and Final Exams in order to earn credit for all other work. NO MAKEUPS and NO LATE WORK Grades are based on a point system 1st Semester: Ch 5 and 6 (Polynomials, Rationals, Exponentials, and Logarithms) 2nd Semester: Ch 8, 9, & 10 (Systems of Equations & Inequalities, Matrices, Sequences, Binomial Expansion, Counting Principles, and Probability)
Things to Remember!!! Mini-Lecture written and online assignments must be completed by the due date, no make-ups or late work. Mini-Lecture written homework will not be graded unless it is QUALITY work. Each mini-lecture written homework should be done on a separate sheet of paper. Written homework must be taken seriously and done in a timely fashion. A schedule with assignments will be made available with plenty of time for students to plan accordingly. The schedule will not change unless there is a problem with the entire network system or an event out of our control interrupts the school day (such as a bomb threat, assembly, etc….) Attendance is absolutely critical during Online Labs, Midterm Exam, and Final Exam. The High School teacher only makes schedules, presents the content, and answers questions, when the syllabus allows, about content. The HS teacher is an only an Adjunct facilitating the class and has no control over the grades. Any problem with grades or conflicts with other events (UIL, conventions, trips, etc…) and the schedule should be brought to the attention of Mr. Hilsenbeck by the student. Conflicts with other evens should be addressed ahead of time, not after the fact.
Be aware that… The grade for College Algebra becomes a grade on your official college transcript. The grade may or may not transfer depending on whether the course is required fro your degree plan requirements. A History major will not require a lot of math, so College Algebra will probably satisfy the math requirements. Therefore, the grade will be used in calculating GPA. An Engineering major requires a lot of mathematics, courses usually in advanced mathematics, so the math requirements start in Calculus. Therefore, credit will be given for College Algebra, but the grade will not be used in calculating GPA. The grade might, in the future, affect financial aid qualifications in either a positive or negative way.
Reviews Some review will be done at the beginning of the course, but the College Algebra curriculum will assume that basic mathematics and fundamental algebraic skills have already been mastered. This means that the reviews are only for the sake of review and will not count toward the College Algebra grade. We will complete the following review prior to starting the Course. Review of Elementary Algebra Review of Intermediate Algebra Review of College Algebra
Time Management Skills Use class time wisely to complete written assignments and on-line assignments when due. Do not endanger computer privileges. Take advantage of notes, practice exercises, and all attempts possible. Do not abuse the 4-day window. Do not let phones or other devices become a distraction.
