Each term in an arithmetic sequence, after the first is found by adding (or subtracting since subtraction is just addition of a negative) the same fixed number to each of the previous terms. In the example 5, 2, -1, -4, … is an arithmetic sequence because to get from 5 to 2, you subtract 3; to get from 2 to -1, you subtract 3; to get from -1 to -4, you subtract 3, etc. So, the common difference is -3.
