Parenting and Child Development 7065, concentrates on relationships between learning about children and becoming a caring parent. This course focuses on learning the emotional, social and physical development of children from infancy to age six in early education and child care settings. We will study parenting perspectives, such as parent-child relationships, roles and relationships of each family member, guidance and discipline. Major areas of study include decision making about parenting, family structures and functions, and prenatal and postnatal development. Projects are an important role in your grade in this class. You will be expected to participate in all projects and turn those in in a timely manner. There are three major projects we will be involved in this semester:

1. Birth Defect Project- PowerPoint Project of a birth defect defining diagnosis, symptoms and how someone acquires defective gene. 2. Planning For Baby- Calculate the costs of pregnancy and preparing for baby. 3. Baby Think it Over- Parenting simulation with a computerized doll. 4. Create an Age-Appropriate Activity- book, skit, bulletin board, game; etc. Tests will be given each week. These are teacher-made tests. Grading: Tests (6 Objectives) 30% Projects 15% Class work (in-class & take home) 15% Classroom participation 15% VoCATS 25% Total 100% Tests will be given every two weeks. There will be three assessment tests given at the end of each 4 ½ week period. The VoCATS test is a standardized test given at the end of the semester on exam days and counts 25% of your overall grade. Projects will be assigned periodically throughout the semester. Students will be given sufficient time in class to complete. Students who do not complete in class due to absences or not using class time wisely will be asked to complete projects at home. Classwork/homework is assigned daily. It is expected to be completed in the time allotted for class and must be your own work. Please make sure to check the wiki or communicate with me regarding work when you are absent. Classroom participation is also a daily grade. To receive credit for your daily participation grade, a student must be:  Engaged in learning (alert, awake, focused and cooperative)  Have all materials ready for class each day (laptops, pencils/pens, paper, assignments)  Must be in attendance consistently (this means not habitually in office, guidance, with other teachers)  Engaged in discussion
