Instruction Sheet for Student ‘Follow Through’ Recruitment
Instructions for all students, both midwifery and medical attending the Lyell McEwin Hospital antenatal clinics in Family Clinics (FC) and Birthing and Assessment Unit – Low (BAUL) and Antenatal Outreach Clinics for the purpose of recruiting women to ‘Follow through’ their pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatally.
It is recognised that the Follow-through Program provides a valuable learning experience for students and is a requirement for registration with the Nurses Board of South Australia for midwifery students. It is also a very personal and precious time for the woman requiring respect and sensitivity.
When attending the Lyell McEwin Hospital antenatal clinics, the following is required
The student is to contact the relevant clinic to inform the Clinical Services Coordinator (CSC) of their intent to recruit - midwifery students attend as per pre identified list - medical students be readily identifiable by wearing a student ID badge present to the senior midwife on the shift, so that she/he is aware that the student is attending for the purpose of recruitment o the senior midwife may then assist to identify appropriate women and note in Allocator that the student is present introduce themself to women provide women with the appropriate recruitment information o make the woman aware of what the program has to offer them, the student’s contact details and also that they can withdraw from the program at any time if they so desire. The woman may choose to take the recruitment information home and consider the proposal and contact the student later with her answer. If agreement is obtained on the day provide midwifery staff with the woman’s details and o complete data collection sheet . original to be filed in the woman’s medical record by hospital staff . carbon copy to be sent to the University
If agreement is not obtained on the day o complete data collection sheet when agreement obtained o post original to Medical Records Medical Records Department Lyell McEwin Hospital Haydown Road Elizabeth vale SA 5112 o carbon copy to be sent to the University
