ST. JAMES ANTIOCHIAN ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN CHURCH

January, 2016 31 Very Rev. Amin Houli Pastor (248) 709-6951 Confession by Appointment EOTHINON 2 TONE 2

2 Thirty-Second Sunday of Pentecost & Fifteenth Sunday of Luke (“Zacchaeus”) Holy and Wonderworking Unmercenaries Cyrus and John Martyrs Athanasia and her daughters Theodota, Theoktiste and Eudoxia of Egypt; New-martyr Elias in the Peloponnesus; Nikita of the Kiev Caves, bishop of Novgorod For Non-Orthodox Christians We welcome all people across all ethnicities and religions to pray with us. However, it is an unfortunate consequence that there are divisions of Christianity, and therefore, we cannot extend to you a general invitation to receive the Eucharist (Holy Communion). Orthodox Christians believe that the Eucharist is an action of the celebrating community, signifying a oneness in faith, life, and worship. Reception of the Eucharist by Christians not fully united with the Orthodox Church would imply a oneness, which does not yet exist, and for which we must all pray. We invite you to receive the blessed and holy bread that is given out to all at the end of the service, and are very pleased that you are with us this morning.

THE EPISTLE May the Lord, give strength to His people, (Ps.30<29>:11) Ascribe to the Lord, O Sons of God, Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength (Ps.30<29>:1) The Reading from Saint Paul's first letter to Timothy 1 Timothy 4:9-15 Timothy, the saying is true and worthy of all acceptance. For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. These are the things you must command and teach. Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands by the council of elders. Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all.

THE GOSPEL The reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke Luke 19:1-10. At that time, Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector, and rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he made haste and came down and received him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner. "And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the son of man came to seek and to save the lost."
