Study Abroad Programs in Japan

☆ Depending on your proficiency level/academic goals/schedules/requirements/financial needs, you may want to find the right program. Be sure to consult with your instructor as well as the ISO Education Abroad Advisor, Ryan Hathaway, to find out what program would be best for you.

☆ Most of the programs require recommendation letters from UVa faculty. Contact your instructors/professors at least 14 days in advance to have them write a letter for you. Don't forget to keep them updated, especially about the result of your application.

A. Exchange Programs:

 Waseda University –UVA U21 Program https://www.apps.studyabroad.virginia.edu/index.cfm? FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&Program_ID=10534 Recommended for those who have completed two years of Japanese. Only one student is accepted per semester/year.

B. Semester/Year Programs affiliated with UVa

 Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies (KCJS) http://www.kcjs.columbia.edu Two years of Japanese required. Competitive.

 J. F. Oberlin University http://www.obirin.ac.jp/en/rj/index.html Six levels of Japanese courses are offered, from beginning to advanced. Scholarship (fully paid tuition) is available for one UVa student in Spring 2015.

C. Other Semester/Year Programs

 International Christian University (ICU) http://www.icu.ac.jp/en/liberalarts/collegewide/jlp.html On quarter system; Three quarters to complete the UVa equivalent of one year is strongly recommend.

1 Updated: 09/20/2014 Intensive courses in First-Year through Fourth-Year available. One semester is the UVa equivalent of one year. This program is intended for students in the State of Michigan, and for that reason acceptance may be limited for out-of-state students.

II. Summer Language Programs

 Critical Language Scholarship Program (CLS) Deadline: mid-Nov. for the next Summer http://www.clscholarship.org/languages/japanese Fully funded by United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Minimum study of two years of Japanese required. Must have U.S. citizenship.

 Hokkaido International Foundation (HIF) Deadline: early February http://www.hif.or.jp/en/summer/ One year of Japanese is required. 8 weeks course will cover roughly one-year of the UVa Japanese program. Strong support from experienced staff members and homestay family.

 International Christian University -Summer Program (ICU) Deadline: end of February http://subsite.icu.ac.jp/scj/ 6-weeks courses. Covers one and half semesters of the UVa Japanese program.

 Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies (IUC) Deadline: mid-March http://www.stanford.edu/dept/IUC/summer.html For advanced learners. Third-year or higher level of Japanese required.

 Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) Deadline: early March http://www.isp.msu.edu/JCMU/students/programs/us.htm Students at any level of Japanese can attend. However, acceptance may be limited. See above.

 Middlebury College Japanese Language School (NOT study-abroad program) Deadline: on a rolling basis: Scholarship available for December applications http://www.middlebury.edu/academics/ls/japanese/ Recommended strongly for those who want to take Intensive Japanese within the States. On a rolling basis application, but fellowships available for early applicants in December.

 J.F. Oberlin University Summer Intensive Japanese Program Deadline: mid-February http://www.obirin-cis.com/?page_id=2174 Five weeks program offers two levels of courses. One-year of Japanese is required.

 Waseda University, Center for Japanese Language Pre-registration Deadline: early March http://www.waseda.jp/cjl/en/s-term_about.html#content Either 3 weeks or 6 weeks. Four beginning courses – intermediate level is offered summer only. 2  Yamasa Institute Deadline: on a rolling basis http://www.yamasa.org/index.html Courses for various specific needs, from 1 week to 2 years, are available. Make sure to check availability of the courses at the level you plan to take, since summer course availability depends on the student enrollment.
