Sam Miller Has Been a Teacher of English, Media Studies and Philosophy for 17 Years

Sam Miller has been a teacher of English, media studies and philosophy for 17 years. Mr. Miller began his teaching career in Toronto, but moved to Kingston in 1993 to start a family with his wife and best friend, Maribeth.

In the classroom Mr. Miller tries to inspire his students to ask hard questions of themselves and their society. According to Miller, “it is not enough for young people to explore only what is on the page or screen in front of them. More importantly, they need to recognize the biases, ideologies and cultural currents beneath these words and images. In a consumer society such as ours, understanding how and why we are being motivated to act or to feel brings empowerment. I believe a teacher’s job is to facilitate this empowerment.”

Mr. Miller’s favourite piece of literature is William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. “As a teacher of both English and philosophy, I love way Shakespeare uses Hamlet to force us to examine our moral loyalties. To me, William Shakespeare is one of the forefathers of modern existentialism.” Miller is also a big fan of bands like the Clash, Steely Dan and Radiohead.

In his free time Mr. Miller likes to cook, eat and spend time with his wife and three ravishing daughters.
