The School Harbour School is a day special school for pupils aged 6 to 16 years. All pupils have a statement of Special Educational needs. Most have complex behavioural, social, emotional and mental health difficulties and additional learning difficulties, such as ADHD, adolescent psychiatric problems, attachment disorder issues along with challenging behaviours. The SE & MH pupils have deep-seated and long-term emotional needs, but are functioning at a higher academic level. A high percentage of pupils also have Autistic Spectrum Disorders. Harbour School has been recognised as ‘outstanding in every aspect’ following an OfSTED Inspection in April 2014. This is the third time in a row that Harbour School has received the ‘outstanding’ status. Many pupils travel from a wide area across Kent to attend Harbour School Employment The post holder is expected to work within the rules and regulations laid down in the current “Kent Scheme” manual. The Head Teacher will take notice of advice given by professional associations. The post holder will demonstrate a commitment to the aims, vision, development plan and policies of the school. In return the management are committed to support in the training and development of all members of staff. We aim to provide staff with the skills they need to fulfil their duties so that we achieve the highest standards in all we do. The post holder will share responsibility for identifying their own individual training needs and will demonstrate a commitment to work collaboratively and co-operatively to fulfil these.

Appraiser: Head Teacher This job profile encompasses in general terms the normal duties which the post holder will be expected to under-take. However, the job profile or the duties contained therein may vary or be amended from time to time without changing the level of responsibility associated with this post or grade.

1. PURPOSE OF JOB  Manage the maintenance and caretaking activities of the school site to ensure the safety, security and sound condition of buildings, facilities and grounds.

3. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

BUDGET MANAGEMENT  To manage above Budgets:  To work within agreed budgets and keep a record of spending. Major items of expenditure to be discussed with the Head Teacher. To liaise with the Admin Officer Finance Officer with regard to spending and ordering.  To maintain adequate stocks of caretaking and cleaning supplies and to re-order further stocks as necessary. BUILDING/SITE MAINTENANCE  Co-ordinate and undertake large-scale improvement and maintenance projects across the site to improve the learning environment within the school.  Arrange for the provision of specialist materials for improvement and maintenance projects to ensure the cost effective use of school funds in such projects.  Liaise with the Governing Body and the Head Teacher on priorities of maintenance and improvement work to ensure the work is carried out in order of priority.  Co-ordinate and supervise at all times all on-site contractors to ensure the smooth operation of maintenance work on the school site.  Undertake general repairs and maintenance around the site, inside and out, including plastering, decorating, repairs on furnishings and buildings, including woodwork to ensure a safe environment is maintained.

CARETAKING  Maintain the security of the site, for example, opening and closing of the premises including those for lettings, dealing with any problems, attend and remain on site with all contractors visiting or working on site, to ensure a safe environment.  Monitor and maintain the boiler system, taking meter readings to ensure the system is kept running on a day to day basis, meets the needs of the site and that the appropriate invoices are received. To help conserve energy and advise the Head Teacher on where/how this can be achieved.  To process and check off the delivery of all goods and supplies ordered as soon as possible after they arrive and deliver to the member of staff who ordered them. Liaise closely with the Admin Officer/Finance Officer regarding any discrepancies.  To access new equipment (with a value of £200 or above) and all electrical equipment to the schools Asset Database and complete a check of all school assets annually. The annual stock check register should be signed off by the Head Teacher. To destroy or discard damaged or unwanted items and ensure that a list of these items is submitted to the Governing Body Premises Team for approval.  In conjunction with the Admin Officer arrange for all items of electrical equipment to be electrically tested annually. Record the testing confirmations on the Asset Database and file the certificate and paperwork.

CLEANING  Deal with any emergency cleaning required especially in critical areas, e.g. food technology.  To ensure that all cleaning is of a consistently high standard and that only approved products and hygienic systems are used throughout the school.  Ensure that the cleaning cupboards are kept locked so that cleaning materials are not accessible and that the cupboards have signs that clearly state their contents.

Personnel\t\staff\jp\Other/Christine Allen.doc HEALTH & SAFETY  Manage all routine safety checks around the site, to include completion of all fire safety, risk assessments and legionellae maintenance to ensure safety of all people on the school site.  To work closely with the school Health & Safety Representative if measures need to be taken to keep staff and/or pupils away from work in progress or other associated hazards.  To work closely with the Governing Body Business & Finance Team, assist in carrying out health & safety checks and take any remedial action needed.  Report any hazards or defects in relation to the building, furniture and plant equipment which could make the school unsafe for children, staff or visitors to the Head Teacher and take immediate action where necessary.  To keep the school site safe, clean and free from litter. To be responsible for maintaining areas and equipment which need minor repair and advising the Head Teacher if major work needs to be carried out.  During the winter months to keep paths, steps and driveways free from ice and snow using salt and grit preparations.  To maintain a diary and information log books, e.g. Fire Alarm Drills and Burglar Alarm Testing.  To keep the fire-record log book up to date, check alarms weekly, fire extinguishers monthly and monitor contractors involved in safety work. To hold fire drills each term in liaison with the Leadership Team.

MINIBUS CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

 Complete all internal and external cleaning of both minibuses on a regular basis.  Respond to any “fault” reports from members staff by either: . Attending to the fault, if it is something you are qualified to attend to; or . Discuss with the Admin Officer if the fault requires the minibus to be booked into a garage.  If a fault is reported which renders the one of the minibuses dangerous to use, or if you find one during cleaning then leave a message on the Staff Room Notice Board, inform a member of the Leadership Team and remove both sets of the minibus keys from circulation until the fault is corrected.  Book the minibus in for its annual services/MOT in liaison with the Admin Officer and well in advance so that members of staff are aware the bus is not available.  Ensure that a copy of the Minibus Policy and enough Minibus Log Sheets are in all minibuses and available for use. 4. JOB CONTEXT a) The post holder has regular contact with staff and has regular contact with all contractors. b) The post holder meets with the Head Teacher at least once a week to feedback on certain issues but sets own agenda and daily tasks. c) The post holder will operate within the general policies of the school. Specifically, polices relating to Health & Safety and Risk Assessment apply. Further, weekly and monthly plans are in place for fire assessment. d) The post holder will also operate to a maintenance plan when undertaking specific maintenance projects. e) Process insurance claims paperwork, liaise with KCC Insurance and ensure a satisfactory outcome to claims f) Negotiate contracts with suppliers (Premises related) to obtain the best deal for the school within agreed policy
