POSITION DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Garage AM Department: Transportation Job Grade: G-40 Non-Exempt Date: November 2, 2015
GENERAL PURPOSE:
The Garage AM position provides technical and administrative support to and coordination of activities of the Transportation Department Director, Operations and Maintenance Supervisor, and Bus Mechanic with liaison activities to the drivers and other City departments and regional and State agencies.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general guidance and supervision of the Transportation Department Director, but performs essential duties and responsibilities under the direction of the Director, Operations and Maintenance Supervisor, and Bus Mechanic.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists the Transportation Department Director in 1) completing daily ridership and financial forms; 2) scheduling and preparing periodic reports to the Federal Transit Administration and the Maine Department of Transportation; 3) other related duties as needs arise.
Assists the Operations and Maintenance Supervisor in 1) coordinating bus driver work schedules; 2) inspecting and assigning buses for the day; 3) facilitating the replacement of buses and drivers due to accidents, equipment failure, illness, or other unforeseen circumstances; 4) performing administrative record keeping to ensure accurate reporting, documentation, and accounting of bus system operations; 5) preparing and maintaining legible, concise activity logs records, incident reports, and other documents relevant to transit operations; 6) carrying out route inspections and driver surveillance activities; 7) answering incoming calls and routing callers or providing information as required; and, 8) making bank deposits.
Assists the Bus Mechanic in 1) maintaining and filing of maintenance forms; 2) assisting in minor maintenance activities; 3) obtaining parts from vendors; 4) hostelling buses for drivers and to and from repair shops; and, 5) transit hub and shelter maintenance.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES:
In the absence of the Operations and Maintenance Supervisor, collects cash receipts from fare boxes and sales outlets including retail stores and college bookstores.
Operates a bus on scheduled route on an ad hoc basis should all other drivers/supervisors not be available. OTHER DUTIES:

MANDATORY MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High school graduate or equivalent. Some college preferred. 2. Must have a valid Maine State Class B driver’s license with a P endorsement. 3. Five years of related experience as an employee in a municipal bus system or other comparable experience.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
1. Working knowledge of equipment, facilities, processes, methods, policies, and procedures used in bus system operations and support. 2. Working knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to a public transit system. 3. Some knowledge of accounting principles and practices. 4. Skill in operation of computer, phone, copy machine, fax machine, base radio, and calculator. Working knowledge of RTA administrative software, Microsoft office package, including Excel, Word and Outlook. 5. Ability to absorb and analyze complex information rapidly, draw logical conclusions, and make rapid decisions with full awareness of the operational and customer service consequences 6. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with staff and the public. 7. Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, feel, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls of vehicles. While performing the duties of this job, the employee predominantly works in a typical office and bus garage environment, with minimal but daily work outside under prevailing weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, machinery, and moving vehicles. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet, cold, hot, or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to diesel engine fumes.
The employee’s hours of employment may be flexible during the operation hours of the Bus Service (5:00 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. M-F and 6:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sat.) in order to cover temporary absences of other staff.
SELECTION GUIDELINES:
