REQUIREMENTS:
1. Each student will perform as a band member on a regular (daily) basis.
2. Each student will provide an acceptable substitute when conducting and/or when absent from class.
3. Each student will be required to write a critical review of three books from a reading list to be provided the first week of classes. Minimum of two pages (single spaced) on each book. Papers will be due Wednesday, July 6, 2016.
4. Each student will prepare and give a 20-minute presentation to the class concerning the pedagogical and rehearsal-oriented concerns of their instrument in the large jazz ensemble. Oral along with written handouts.
5. Class attendance requirements will be in accordance with the written policy found in the current College of Music Handbook (the policy for graduate students will be applied in this instance for undergraduates as well).
6. Grading scale: Conducting sessions will account for 70% of total grade. Presentation 10%, class participation 10%, critical reviews 10%.
GOALS:
The primary objective of this course is to prepare each student for success as the director of a jazz ensemble at any level. This will be achieved by focusing on the following areas:
1. Conducting skills and techniques 2. Rehearsal preparation and methods 3. Score study: Orchestration as applied to the Jazz Ensemble 4. Repertoire, composers and arrangers 5.
