Revalidation newsletter

3 July 2015

Welcome to the second edition of the Scottish Government revalidation newsletter!

This newsletter brings you the most recent information in relation to developments for revalidation to keep you up to date with how we are progressing plans in Scotland, to understand the potential impact for us all.

As you know we are awaiting the outcomes of the analysis from the work that the NMC has commissioned to help estimate the impact of revalidation from different perspectives - for individual registrants, organisational and the national position. NHS Tayside and partners who undertook the pilot in Scotland are also currently analysing their information and we will share this with you as soon as we can. Those of you who were able to join us on the recent webex will have heard from: Alan Tipping at the NMC, who shared with us the NMC plans to research the perception of NMC as a regulator; Gillian Costello who shared information from the NHS Tayside pilot; and Maggie Grundy, who gave an update on the exciting possibilities for NES’ work in supporting revalidation. If you missed the webex and you wish to catch up – you can access the recording here.

We have arranged the next webex for Monday, 13th July between 1430-1600hrs and I hope you can join us then – details of how to join are listed in the sidebar below and details will also be sent to you in a separate email.

Please also note the revised arrangements for the NMC twitter chat to be held on 7th July - see detail below.

As ever, please continue to encourage and support your colleagues to register with NMC online to confirm their revalidation date, and to develop and e- portfolio; the NES version can be found here.

Have a lovely weekend and I’ll look forward to speaking with you during the webex on Monday, 13 th July – in the interim if there is anything you would like to discuss please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Communications – what’s happening? The NMC has updated us on their plans to write to every individual NMC registrant to help support and raise awareness of the expected changes and plans for revalidation – letters will be sent out in August (not July as previously advised) so please look out for these dropping through your letterbox.

The latest edition of the NMC ‘Revalidation round-up’ has just been released – it’s attached to this email – but why not sign up to receive it direct from the NMC – details are in the sidebar on this page. The July edition lists new resources such as a link to the NMC publication - Guide for Employers, to help preparation for revalidation, a link to a tool to assist nurses and midwives identify who should be their Confirmer and an explanation about the difference between renewal date and revalidation date and what this will mean.

Educational support:

As we discussed during the webex meetings, the development of educational modules is well underway. There will be opportunity to engage directly with the education providers during September, when five events will take place at locations across Scotland. We hope to demonstrate the modules to between 200-250 people over the five days (25 people at each of 2 sessions per day), and to include as many organisations, both NHS and non-NHS as possible. We will be looking for staff who are able to attend, see the demonstration of the modules at first hand, and then undertake to cascade the training locally to their colleagues; therefore educators, OD and HR staff may wish to be nominated for this first wave of training. The modules and speakers’ notes will also be available to everyone free of charge on the NMC website in due course. Projections are underway to estimate the allocation of NHS spaces proportionate to their nursing and midwifery workforce, geographical locations and dates for each region. Venues are still to be arranged and these will be confirmed in due course.

The 5 modules under development include:

 Roles and accountabilities

 Creating and developing a portfolio

 How to reflect on your practise/ reviewing reflections

 The professional development discussion

 Confirming evidence within the portfolio Additionally NES are also planning some education events with an educational focus and more details will become available in the near future, including the development of an online community of practice.
