Who are Bonner Scholars at Concord? . Over 23000 students have participated in the program since the first class of scholars started in Fall of 1991

. Majority of students (approximately 70 percent overall) have been native West Virginians

. Majority of students have been first- generation college students (average 59 percent of each incoming freshman class)

. Students from Bulgaria, Ghana, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland, Russia, Spain, Nepal, and UK have participated in program

. Majority of students (85-95 percent in any year) participate in summer service activities supported and funded by the Bonner Foundation

. Students have received over $3.31 million in total scholarship dollars during the life of the program

. Five Three Bonner Scholars have been Concord College valedictorians since the program began

. Typical incoming class has 13 percent of students with family contribution greater than $5,000; average family contribution for all others is $860 (we continue to serve the neediest students)

What is the impact of Bonner Scholars on the agencies we serve? . Over 25030,000 service hours completed, approximately 90 percent in southern WV

. At today’s minimum wage rate of $5.15, these hours equate to more than $1.2 million in fiscal impact

How do Bonner Scholars affect our campus and local community? Through. . . . Learn & Serve America: Higher Education Grant for the development of community research components to be included in coursework requirements. (Grant period 1997-2000)

. AmeriCorps Educational Award Program: available for 20-30 students each year to participate. Program requires 900 hours of community service in a 2-year period. For completion of program, student receives an educational award of $2,362.50

. FIPSE Replication Grant received by the Bonner Foundation for the development of community service scholarship programs, based on the Bonner Scholars Program Model, at other higher education institutions. (Concord worked with Bluefield State College and Southwest Virginia Community College in this project. Grant period: 1998-2000)

. WV Dept of Education Grant to support an After-School Program at Athens Elementary in Athens, WV. (Grant period: 1996-1998)

. Subgrant from Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center of WVU WV Dept of Health and Human Resources, Division of Tobacco Prevention to study tobacco use on campus and to provide educational materials to students. Tobacco education lessons will be presented at the CASE/ Concord Child Development Center After-School Program participants. (Grant period: 20031)

How do Benedum Foundation grantees use Bonner Scholars?

We have a student who volunteers on a regular basis at the McDowell County Public Library in Welch.

We have students who volunteer each year at the Learning Day Camp held at the Appalachian South Folklife Center in Pipestem.

We have had one VISTA worker through the APPALREAD Program at SWVCC.
