EL TRANSPORTE EN ESPAÑA Using public transport Public transport in Spain is cheaper than in any other European country. There is a single fare on the buses (los autobuses) and on the underground railway system ( el metro), no matter what distance you are travelling. Both Madrid and Barcelona have an extensive underground network, with reduced fares for young people and old age pensioners. There are also season tickets available for frequent travellers, which allow them to use not only the underground system but also buses and certain trains. In Madrid, these special tickets are known as el abono transportes or la tarjeta de abono, a ticket valid for ten journeys. In big cities you pay the driver on a bus, or purchase el abono transportes, which you punch in a machine as you board the bus or metro.
In some cities there are swift bus services provided by microbuses, which start from the city outskirts and go directly to the city centre without stopping. The Spanish railway system is called “la Renfe”( Red Nacional de Ferrocarriles Españoles) , the Renfe has an extended national and international service. The main cities such as Madrid, Sevilla and Barcelona are covered by El Talgo ( a fast long- distance train) and the international service covers cities such as Paris, Lisboa and Ginebra. On certain days during the week, called días azules (blue days), travel on Spanish Railways is available at reduced rates.
The principal types of trains are: AVE – a high- speed train like the French TGV Intercity - similar to the British train of the same name Electrotren – a fast electric train Rápido, expreso – a night stopping train. Tren de cercanias – similar to a British commuter train.
